HERE IS ANOTHER ANSWER, IN A HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION:
EXAMPLE:
as a registered steward that volunteers for the forest service thru
FDRD or FENW or SCORR,
fenw.joec volunteers to do a weed survey on his favorite trail, the
TRAINING trail; because this trail has seen the pesky TRAINING weed
areas expand over the years.
PLAN:
so a week or so prior to action, fenw.joec logs on and schedules to
patrol the TRAINING trail on june 4, 2007 from about 8am to noon.
a couple days later, a fellow registered steward fdrd.joec sees
fenw.joec plan and decides to join efforts and so schedules to patrol
the TRAINING trail on june 4, 2007 from 10am to 2pm
-----------------
ACT: June 4, 2007
-----------------
7:30 am fenw.joec goes over to DRD-HQ
7:35 am fenw.joec prints out a weed survey page. doesn't print out
anything else because the scope of this act is weeds.
7:40 am fenw.joec checks out USFS GPS ID #42 for the purpose of
volunteer work and so writes that on the printed report form: USFS-42
7:45 am fenw.joec turns unit on and looks at power meter and
determines there are enough battery power for 4 hours of volunteer
work so no need to get extra batterys
7:50 am fenw.joec looks at the GPS settings and determines the device
is set up for WGS84 UTM gps settings. fenw.joec writes WGS84 UTM on
report form and then turns off the GPS unit to conserve battery power
until it is needed -- on the trail.
7:55 am fenw.joec departs the DRD-HQ to travel to the TRAINING trail
via his favorite method of transportation - ox cart.
8:05 am fenw.joec arrives by oxcart at trailhead. On-site survey
begins by turning on the GPS device and reading the GPS device to
determine it is receiving at least 3-SAT signals and is operating
properly. fenw.joec writes the time at trailhead on the report top
margin.
8:10am fenw.joec starts hiking. GPS unit is stored in backpack with
POWER ON.
8:25 am fenw.joec comes across a volume of TRAINING weed that is
desired for reporting and pulls out GPS device. It takes a couple
minutes to see that the GPS receiver is getting at least 3-SAT signals
at this location. After good reception is verified, fenw.joec presses
the WAYPOINT button on the gps device. The waypoint id assigned by the
GPS unit is LMK001, so fenw.joec writes down waypoint LMK001 on the
paper form and notes that
SPECIES CT, INFESTED AREA 15, DENSITY 10, UNIT OF MEAS. COUNT, HABITAT
TYPE GRASS
so the line-item on the report is
LMK001, CT, 15, 10, #, GRASS/OPEN
throughout the day fenw.joec continues work. At each waypoint, time is
taken to ensure 3-SAT signal reception -- otherwise the data is no
good. fenw.joec's other line-items look like:
LMK002, MT, 14, 9, %, SHRUB/SAVANNAH
LMK003, PT, 13, 8, #, FOREST
LMK004, YT, 12, 7, %, FOREST
LMK005, OD, 11, 6, #, SHRUB/SAVANNAH
LMK006, FC, 10, 5, %, GRASS/OPEN
LMK007, SK, 9, 4, #, GRASS/OPEN
LMK008, cheatgrass, 8, 3, %, SHRUB/SAVANNAH
LMK009, cheatgrass, 7, 2, #, FOREST
LMK010, cheatgrass, 6, 1, %, FOREST
LMK011, cheatgrass, 5, 11, #, SHRUB/SAVANNAH
LMK012, cheatgrass, 4, 12, %, GRASS/OPEN
LMK013, cheatgrass, 3, 13, #, GRASS/OPEN
LMK014, cheatgrass, 2, 14, %, SHRUB/SAVANNAH
LMK015, cheatgrass, 1, 15, #, FOREST
fenw.joec runs out of paper form and wants to keep working so turns
paper over and writes on the back of the form. For data entry
purposes . . . this will be a second report (because there are only 15
line-items on form presently). EACH FORM requires a stopping point
position written down . . . . as a checkpoint. so after each 15
lines . . . you need to read the device settings and write it down on
paper . . . in this case fenw.joec notes on the form that stopping
point position FOR REPORTING PURPOSES is 4400000 Northing and 380000
Easting.
at the end of the volunteer work . . . GPS devices are turned OFF and
returned to the owner. In this case the GPS belongs to DRD-HQ and are
checked back in.
The owner of the GPS device will download the info from the GPS device
on another day.
fenw.joec will report the paper data on another day, but no more than
30-or-so days from the date the data was collected.
fenw.joec writes down the time returned to trailhead in the margin of
the report.
------------------------------------
REPORT: within 30 days of field work
------------------------------------
fenw.joec has time to do computer work including communicating future
volunteer plans.
(a) logon
(b) navigate to RANGER menu (if needed)
(c) enter DATE (OF FIELD WORK) JUNE 4, the day of the week (field
work), the GPS unit, the GPS settings, and report scope WEEDS.
(d) click EXPAND button.
(e) report displayed is for the report scope selected.
(f) enter data:
LMK001, CT, 15, 10, #, GRASS/OPEN
LMK002, MT, 14, 9, %, SHRUB/SAVANNAH
LMK003, PT, 13, 8, #, FOREST
LMK004, YT, 12, 7, %, FOREST
LMK005, OD, 11, 6, #, SHRUB/SAVANNAH
LMK006, FC, 10, 5, %, GRASS/OPEN
LMK007, SK, 9, 4, #, GRASS/OPEN
LMK008, cheatgrass, 8, 3, %, SHRUB/SAVANNAH
LMK009, cheatgrass, 7, 2, #, FOREST
LMK010, cheatgrass, 6, 1, %, FOREST
LMK011, cheatgrass, 5, 11, #, SHRUB/SAVANNAH

LMK013, cheatgrass, 3, 13, #, GRASS/OPEN
LMK014, cheatgrass, 2, 14, %, SHRUB/SAVANNAH
LMK015, cheatgrass, 1, 15, #, FOREST
(g) click EDIT button
(h) review and click SUBMIT button
report submits. if a printout is desired, click on LAST REPORT next to
TRAIL NAME and then print out using browser's print function.
if an electronic copy was desired at report time, should have checked
EMAIL A COPY before submitting report.
NEXT, COMMUNICATE PLANS (future volunteer work) TO FELLOW STEWARDS. So
using the RANGER menu that contains everyone's published plans, review
it and decide where to put your volunteers efforts. To communicate
with others what those are, click UPDATE MY SCHEDULE and enter your
plan.
NEXT, RECORD VOLUNTEER HOURS. Click TIMECARD and enter volunteer hours
that includes all time on the trail but also planning time and commute
time and reporting time.
-----------------------------
ALTERNATIVE REPORTING METHODS
-----------------------------
If someone doesn't like expanding the report scope every time,
they can choose to exclude reports from scope instead.
if interested in exclude method, see FAQ FORMS (HELP | FAQ FORMS)
and click on how do i get forms for my electronic device.
--------------------------------------------------
SO WHERE IS THE GPS COORDINATES FOR EACH LINE-ITEM ?
--------------------------------------------------
they are in the gps device and are merged with the report on a later
date. THE KEY FIELDS FOR MERGING GPS DATA AND REPORT DATA IS THE GPS
ID # AND THE WAYPOINT NAME. IN THIS CASE, THE GPS UNIT IS USFS-42 and
the waypoints are LMK001 thru LMK015.
It is critical that GPS unit # and Waypoint names are not misspelled.
If they don't match up, we lose the gps points or someone needs to
manually match them trying to turn someone's mis-spellings or mis-
communications into "GEE . . . what were there intentions".
