I just read an article on my local running store's website about
carbohydrates. It mentioned in the article to use energy gels OR
sports drinks, but not both together. What is the risk? Is there
something I need to know? I am pretty sure I have washed down a GU
with Gatorade during a race in the past with no negative consequences.

I don't think there is any risk involved, it may just be quite heavy on the
stomach. You may also risk that later in your race your stomach may not be
that keen any more to accept more of the stuff...

One thing you should keep in mind is that these products contain
sodium so washing a gel down with a sports drink could give you more
sodium than you want. I think a recent edition of Runner's World
listed the nutritional values of pretty much every drink, gel, and
nutrient replacement on the market. I like to use ShotBloks and I was
surprised to see how much sodium was in the margarita flavored Blok
compared to the other flavors. That was a case where combining that
flavor with a sports drink could pose a problem. Since I also use
Succeed on 20+ mile runs, I wouldn't want to also use that flavor of
ShotBlok. My advice is always read the labels.

Cheers

My immeadiate response, already expressed here, is that their concern is over doing nutrition can cause GI issues later on 250-300 calories per hour is my rule of thumb, be it from a gel, drink, PB&J or a combination, but also too many electrolytes can make things go wonky (been there done that!) like Martin says labels are a good place to start

I'm sure it won't be fatal...for all the reasons mentioned. I
sometimes will do both, but usually if I do I alternate, or water down
the sports drink. (Apparently another sin, according to some
magazines, but full strength and I am guaranteed to be feeling
miserable at some point.)

I always carry immodium on every race and long run. It's the law. ;) I
often don't have to use it, but when I do it's like a miracle in a
tiny little pill.

The only risk is you may have sever stomach issues as you run. The
Glucose and sodium in one, combined with a similar concentration in
the other causes - distress.

Thanks all! I guess it should go in the category of "Don't try it on
race day unless you try it in training."
