Dear fellow Upper School Administrators,

Happy Friday!  It is contract time and I am evaluating our current policy regarding stipends.  We seem to have a lot of them and I'm curious to hear what your policy is regarding clubs/activities and stipends.  Do you offer a stipend to a teacher for advising a club or being involved in an extracurricular activity, or is it an expected duty as a faculty member?

Look forward to seeing you at the next retreat,

Tom

Hi Tom,

We have coaching stipends for teachers, but no club stipends. We do have a yearbook stipend, due to the amount of work in involved.

Thanks,

Chris

At the Vanguard School our stipends are given to those who coach and one staff member who coordinates our Saturday School which is an extension of our school year. It is an expectation for teachers to sponsor clubs and activities throughout the school year.

Hi Tom,

Part of our contractual expectation is that every faculty member is expected to be involved in the lives of students outside of the classroom in some official capacity. This includes coaching, club advising, etc. This covers virtually all of our needs. In unusual cases when we need particular coverage, we may give a stipend; however, this is usually a short-term solution. Several years ago my predecessor helped to take on this issue at Tampa Prep. Apparently, there is much less grumbling now than there was before when we were stipend heavy. Good luck taking that one on!

Tom,

We offer stipends for coaching, but sponsoring or advising other clubs and activities are an expected part of faculty contracts. We offer a small sum of money for faculty on overnight trips ($30/night), more to cover incidentals than as compensation.

Tom,
At CSN we offer stipends to teachers who coach academic teams, such as MuAlphaTheta or Congres'. If the team has an academic focus and results in competition, then those teachers receive a stipend. Student interest clubs do not.
