Dear fellow Upper School Administrators,

We are currently reviewing our AP policies so I am interesting in hearing what your policies are regarding the following:

1. Do you limit the number of APs you allow your students to take per year? If so, how many?

2. Do you require students enrolled in an AP class to take the AP exam?

Thanks very much,

Tom

Hi Tom,
I am interested to hear the feedback you receive. We are wrestling with similar questions at Tampa Prep. I have fantasies of doing away with the AP Program entirely. It would free up our teachers to be far more creative and responsive. The current reality is that we are not ready for a serious discussion on that topic. Admissions and college placement fears are strong (and understandable). In the mean time, we all struggle to manage the AP classes as best as we can. Maybe someone will have some creative insights that we can "borrow"? Happy February.

We do not have a specific rule limiting APs. We try to do our best to engage each student individually in this conversation. When appropriate we will tell a student they can't take a particular AP. However, there are definitely times when a student takes on too much despite our advice.

2. Do you require students enrolled in an AP class to take the AP exam?

We leave this policy up to each teacher to determine. Some require all students, others don't. It is a topic of discussion for us as well. On the one hand, it is disingenuous to put an AP course on a transcript if the student does not fulfill the expectations of that course. The AP Exam is a pretty big piece of the class. The flip side is that is seems wasteful to force a student to pay for an AP exam if they are attending a college that does not give AP credit or if it is clear that they are not prepared to pass. In those situations, I feel it is important to offer an alternative culminating assessment.

Tom,

In answer to your questions:

1.  We have a general rule that we do not recommend more than 3 AP classes in any one year.  Of course there are exceptions and we discuss those with involved parties individually.

2.  We do require that students enrolled in AP classes sit for the exam.  If it is on their transcript they should take the exam.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Ashley

At Academy at the Lakes, we do not set a hard limit for AP’s.  It is an individually counseled thing, depending on the ability and capacity of the student.  We do require our students who take an AP course to take the AP exam.

1. We do not limit APs but we do have individual conversations with students/parents about what we think is appropriate to handle for each student.

2. We have at times allowed a student not to take an AP exam but we do have a conference with the parent.

Good afternoon,

The answers to your questions regarding our AP policies are:
1. Students are limited to 1 AP in the sophomore year, 2 APs in the junior year, and 3 APs in the senior year.  Individual cases, in which students may exceed these limits, would require special review and approval by the the administration and department chairs.
2. Students enrolled in an AP course are required to take the AP exam for that course.

Best,
Chi

Generally at Lake Highland a very limited number of freshmen may take one AP, qualified sophomores may take two with academic counseling, juniors and seniors are limited to three in principle, but we have a fair number of top scholars who take more, up to six in some cases.  All students in AP courses are required to take the AP Board exam.

Hi,

At Community School of Naples we offer one AP course to freshmen, some sophomores may have the option of taking two AP courses.  Upperclassmen are not restricted by school policy, so they often take four or five AP classes.  We tried limiting students to three, but mostly parents objected to that policy.
