Aurora Department News….

The District 2 PAR unit would like to congratulate the District 2 Commanding Officer, Commander Richard Cimms, on his retirement. Commander Cimms was an avid supporter of all of our community policing and enforcement efforts and was instrumental in reducing crime and increasing the quality of life in the community during his tenure at District 2. Commander Cimms was a great boss to work for and an all around good guy, he will be missed.

We would also like to welcome Acting Commander Vanessa Wilson who takes over as the Commanding Officer of District 2 as of Saturday the 16th.

Crime Tip of the Week…
At least we don’t have to deal with this issue, but I thought it interesting and would be good for a few laughs..

Truthfully, the best way to avoid an alligator attack is by using common sense. Since common sense isn't all that common, here is a little clarification for those of you who need it. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Here's the short version:
Stay away from alligators. Alligators are large, wild animals with very basic instincts. The most basic instinct is to eat, and except for mating occasionally, they have few other interests. A fully grown alligator can reach 13 feet and 600 pounds. This fully grown alligator has a brain the size of a walnut. He's not into multitasking - he has one thing on his mind - Eat! - and there is little room for anything more. Alligators will eat nearly anything, but have shown a preference for dogs, chicken, and marshmallows.
They will usually be in the edges of water where they can hide in the reeds or head for deeper water. While they are fresh-water creatures, they have occasionally been spotted in the briny water of the intercoastal waterway and even in the Atlantic ocean. During mating season (May - June) the alligator finds himself with two thoughts on his mind, eating AND sex. The strain of this additional mental stimulation makes the gators quite edgy and aggressive. It is particularly good to avoid them at this time. Gators who have been fed lose their fear of people. It is against the law to feed a wild alligator in Florida, but occasionally it happens. These alligators will eventually need to be destroyed, because their lack of fear will make them dangerous to people and domestic animals.
So, here are some do's and don't's for living around alligators:

Over the past month there were numerous complaints coming from the Traditions and Adonea sub-divisions about speeding on Harvest and Little River roads, mostly advising that Vista Peak students and parents were the issue. I had the Traffic unit place digital speed monitoring devices at both locations for a week at a time. The reports from the signs showed that there was an issue with speeding, primarily from 6 A.M. to 8 A.M. and again from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. After the traffic study Traffic and PAR Officers went to both locations over the course of several days and issued summonses for speeding. And yes, they were all to residents living in Traditions and Adonea. I will continue to go to both locations and monitor the speeding in the neighborhoods.
Another reminder, it is ILLEGAL to drive on the wrong side of the road. For folks that use a community mail box.....I get it, it's easier to drive up, get out your passenger door, step onto the sidewalk and grab your mail and
get back in your car. Again, it's illegal, if you are caught doing so, you will receive a summons. And, as a side note, please be courteous to your neighbors and don't park in front of the mailbox and read your mail....just sayin.

Crime Tip of the Week…
When you're ready to leave your child home alone for the first time, a few questions can ensure success for both you and your child.
How young is too young? It's obvious that a 5-year-old can't go it alone but that a 16-year-old probably can. But what about those school-aged kids in the middle? It can be difficult to know when kids are ready to handle being home alone.
Children 8 years and under should be supervised at all times with a caregiver available. An 8 year old should not be left in charge of other children. In other words, never home alone. Children who are 9 years old should not be left unsupervised for periods greater than two hours during the daytime. A child of this age should not be unsupervised during sleeping hours. Children this age should not be responsible for younger children.
Age isn’t the only factor to consider in how leaving a child home alone. It's also important to consider how your child handles various situations. Here are a few questions to think about:
•Does your child show signs of responsibility with things like homework, household chores, and following directions?
•How does your child handle unexpected situations? How calm does your child stay when things don't go as planned?
•Does your child understand and follow rules?
•Can your child understand and follow safety measures?
•Does your child make good judgments or is he or she prone to taking risks?
•Does your child know basic first-aid procedures?
•Does your child follow your instructions about staying away from strangers?
You'll want to know how your child feels about the idea, of course. But kids often insist that they'll be fine long before parents feel comfortable with it. And then there are older kids who seem afraid even when you're pretty confident that they'd be just fine. What can you do make the situation work well for everyone?
- Post a list of emergency numbers including family members, trusted friends and neighbors, and emergency personnel.
- Make sure your child knows his/her phone number and address. Write these on the list of important numbers. It is very easy for anyone, especially a child, to panic in an emergency and lose focus on something they know well – such as your work phone number. If included on the list, your child can easily read aloud to a 911 operator in case of emergency.
- Keep a first aid kit in the house. Teach your child basic first aid.
- Make sure there are working smoke detectors on every floor of the house and teach your child what to do in case of fire. Practice fire evacuation routes with your children.
- Keep a flashlight and batteries in an easily accessible place in case of power outage. Show your child where to find it.
- Make sure that your child has a way to contact you when you are away from the home, including a cell phone and/or work number. Check your messages often and promptly return your child’s calls.
- Limit the kind of cooking that can be done absent adult supervision.
- Use caller id or an answering machine to screen calls. Have your child tell callers their mom/dad is busy and will call them back.
- Keep all doors and windows locked.
- Practice saying no to peer pressure if friends encourage the child to break rules in your absence?
As you child stays home alone more often, look for what has gone right and praise your child for doing a good job. Reevaluate how the arrangement is working occasionally and adjust rules accordingly. You may be pleasantly surprised at how readily and how well your child assumes responsibility when fully prepared and given the opportunity

Crime Tip of the Week…
Beware Con Artists…
- Avoid large cash transactions. Use checks, get receipts.
- Have Social Security and other checks direct-deposited, rather than sent to your home.
- Be very careful when dealing with door-to-door solicitors, such as home repairmen. Deal with reputable, local businesses. Talk to trusted friends and relatives for recommendations. Get references; get contract terms in writing. Don’t pay in cash.
- Watch out for schemes where strangers ask you to put up your own money in a show of “good faith”, with the promise of a bigger jackpot later, or ask you to withdraw money from the bank to assist in catching a criminal. These are among several common cash
frauds.
- Beware of telephone soliciting for money.
- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
