Weird formatting HTML?

I loaded up a HTML based ebook and thought I'd read it. Couldn't do it
though because whole sections of text were missing.

Sentences that started with "I'd like (albeit with "real" quotation
marks, not just a ") had that part cut out, for instance, formatting
was off etc. Now, looking at the HTML code it did have lots of crap in
it, but it was valid HTML.

I converted the text to RTF in Word and that reads without a problem,
but having to convert in the first place is a pain.
