I use my EEPC frequently as an ebbokreader with FB reader and the
original Xandros software. It really is better than any specialised
reader!
But: I can't read any books from my removable drives (sticks or
cards) .Is there a (simple)way to do that? I have to transfer my files
to the My Documents folder to read the books.

2. Is there a way to update fb reader? I want to be able to read
epubs.

I am not very good with script things, so a simple help would be
really nice

When you move the files to My Documents do they then automatically
show up in FBReader's library view? If so, then what you want to edit
is FBReader's book path (where it looks for ebooks). See
http://www.fbreader.org/alan/ which is about the PepperPad but which
should be close enough. Typically in Linux a removable card is in /
media (e.g. /media/usb or whatever).

Another option is to use FBReader's "Add file" (BOOK+) option to
manually add the ebook to your library. This is again described in my
PepperPad tour. This is one way to initially see where your removable
card is located, even if eventually you want to edit FBReader's book
path.

If you don't get any specific response here about updating FBReader on
a EEE, try asking at EeeUser Forum, http://forum.eeeuser.com/. What I
saw there was the following:

You can install FBReader through synaptic. (in a terminal window type:
"sudo synaptic"
Refresh the list (left top) and search for fbreader (or FBReader).
Mark it for install, click "apply" (or whatever it is called in your
language) and ignore all warnings that will appear..

However, that may only get you Asus's version if FBReader. Another
post I saw just said use FBReader's standard Debian download
instructions from http://www.fbreader.org/desktop/debian.php My guess
is that this is correct, but the instructions may not provide enough
detail for a novice.

Open the FBReader menu. Select "Add book" and navigate to /home/user/D:
then whatever subdirectory your books are in. That should allow you to
access any books on the SD card. (I have to do something similar on my
Nokia 770)

I checked on my own 701 and can give you a definite answer - slightly
long but informative :-)

The FBReader cannot handle file names with the : character included -
probably a Windows 'thing' :) The Xandros distro on the 701 gives
any external (mounted) drive such as your USB stick a name like D:
(again probably to make things easier for Windows users using Linux
for the first time). This thus stops the USB stick data being handles
by this reader :(

A simple solution, other than simply copying the files to your local
folder (as you have already done), is the following:

Go to the folder on your USB stick using the file manager. Create a
new folder (eg. ebooks) to hold your ebooks and move any ebooks
currently on that stick into that new folder. Then right click on that
folder name - and select 'create symbolic link'. OK, then change the
link name to something like /home/user/usb_ebooks - note NO :
character - and press OK.

Now, in the FBreader itself, try to add an ebook as usual. If you look
for /home/user folder yuo'll see the usb_ebooks folder. Select and
press OK - you'll NOW be able to select the actual ebook!

The link *should* still be there when you remove the USB stick and
thus available next time you use a USB stick.

I hope this has helped

What you need to do is to the following:

1) put in the USB stick
2) select 'open in file manager' from pop-up menu
3) create a new folder on USB stick and move all ebooks into that
4) select new folder entry and right-click mouse - then click on
'create symbolic link' item
5) for name of link use /home/user/<name of folder> don't include <
or > and name should not contain :
6) press OK button

Then, in FBReader you will be able to work with your ebooks via that
symbolic link. The problem was that the reader cannot work with files
which contain character : - a carryover from Windows, also Xandros
being most un-linuxish using D: or such as the USB stick mount point
name.

I hope this helps

This is due to the use of ":" as the filename separator in FBReader's
search path. The Windows version uses ";" instead, and that may be
the eventual fix (although it will break all existing paths).

A work around might be to include the directory name in quotes, or
perhaps to use D\: in place of D: in the path.

A better solution is to set up a symbolic link to the D: directory and
include the name of the link in the book search path. Perhaps, since
beginners will not be comfortable doing this, it could be an
user-settable option and the software will take care of creating the
link and adding the name to the search path ?
