Richard Olmstead Sustainable Living Trade Show

Next Friday & Saturday,  June 17th & 18th, the Richard Olmstead Sustainable Living Trade Show (ROSLTS) will be held at NBCC Woodstock to raise awareness and interest in environmental responsibility, and find workable solutions for our local area and beyond.  The ROSLTS is being partnered by the Woodstock Sustainable Energy Group (SEG), the NBCC Woodstock Campus Green Committee, Transition Town Woodstock and Falls Brook Centre (FBC).

The trade show is being dedicated to the late Richard Olmstead who was a lifelong resident of our area and a leader in environmental and sustainable living causes.  Richard was the manager of information technology at NBCC – Woodstock for many years and was one of the most active members of SEG.  He was convinced that an environment-focused trade show in western New Brunswick is the best way to raise public awareness of these issues, leading a movement towards more sustainable, and healthier, lifestyles in the province.

The ROSLTS will begin on Friday afternoon with the exhibitors setting up their booths.  Speerville Flour Mill will bring its ever popular outdoor pizza oven on Friday night to the NBCC Courtyard so exhibitors and the public can enjoy healthy pizza’s made with organic grains and locally produced toppings.  The cost will be $7 per person.  Children under 8 are free.

An omelet, waffle and sausage breakfast will be served in the Cafeteria from 8am until 10am on Saturday.  Simply for Life will serve a breakfast comprised of healthy, mostly organic foods produced in the local area.  The price will be $7 per person with children under 8 free.  Later in the day, Simply for Life will host a workshop on cooking for a healthy lifestyle, complete cooking demonstrations, taste samples and recipes.

After breakfast, FBC will begin a morning full of activities geared toward the youth.

The Exhibit Hall, located in the gym, will be open from 9am to 4pm on Saturday.  The exhibitors will have products, services and educational tools on display that can help you live a life style that is more sustainable.  Some examples include organic farming and gardening, hybrid cars, electric vehicles, bicycle maintenance and operation, environmentally friendly investing, recycling, chemical friendly paints and furniture, pellet stoves, and geothermal heating and cooling systems.  You can gain access to the Exhibit Hall, all presentations and workshops for only a toonie.

David Coon, Director of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, will give the keynote address at 10am about the importance of sustainable practices in everyday living.  At 11am, Krista Downey, the environmental architect leading the Green Canary Group, will speak about successful collaboration in green construction projects, whether it is new building or a renovation to your home.

At 1pm, Rachel Lanteigne, Public Outreach Manager for Efficiency NB, will discuss opportunities for improving the energy efficiency in your home, including the Residential Energy Efficiency Program available through Efficiency NB.  At 2pm, Jason Juurlink, Coordinator for Renewable Projects at FBC will present ideas and information for implementing renewable energy projects at the home, farm and business.

The ROSLTS promises to be a fun and informative event that will help individuals and the community become more sustainable on our path to a world with less fossil fuel and a changed climate.
