PEI organic farmer and Vietnam War Resister Gary Clausheide will be
touring the Maritimes in late March to discuss the topic of "Building
Sustainable Community in Times of Declining Oil Stocks". The tour will
travel to Halifax, Sackville, Fredericton, and possibly additional
locations, with a Charlottetown event later in April.
Gary will explore the recent history of the Western world, how we have
been organized (economically, politically, and socially), capitalism,
socialism, and egalitarian democratic theories and models from the
past, the present, and for the future. We will also discuss the reality
of Peak Oil, declining availability and rising prices, as well as
potential impacts on society, economics, and politics.
We will explore what sustainable community means and how we can build
it (eg. decentralization, autonomy, cooperative decision-making,
participatory economics and participatory democracy), including one
possible model for an intentional community.
We will be using a diesel car for the tour that has been converted to
run on waste vegetable oil (used deep-fryer oil). We will also offer a
semi-formal workshop on vegetable oil fueled vehicles and the diesel
conversion process, including an examination of the converted vehicle
used for the tour.
This tour is being organized by Earth Action, a Prince Edward Island
based organization that works for environmental education and action.
We do not accept funding from governments or corporations. If you'd
like us to come to your community, or want to help support or promote
the Tour, please get in touch.
