Ruby client vs JavaScript client

I've been trying to get rewrite an older working JavaScript Faye client in Ruby. From watching the incoming and outgoing messages everything that the Ruby client sends looks to be identical to the JavaScript version except that the first publish request always fails with "error": "401::The message requested is restricted." Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
