I've tried all the different LG drivers I can find, but I can't get
the XP PC to recognise the GT540 when I plug it in.
I get no entry in Device Manager for ADB of any sort.

Anyone managed to get this working with the GT540?

Hi, Robert.

Please make sure that your LG device is *not* in Mass Storage mode (ie., mounted as a removable drive or access as a storage device) when it is initially connected to your computer.  Mass storage mode takes precedence over USB debugging mode on LG devices, so it must be disabled.  You can find this somewhere in your phone's settings menu or possibly by pulling down Android's notification pane when the phone is connected to your computer.

If your phone is already in "USB debugging" mode with Mass Storage disabled, do you see anything regarding Android or ADB under "Other devices"?  That would mean that Windows does see your phone but is indeed missing drivers.

Wow! Quick reply, thanks.

Ah! That's made a difference, but still not fully sorted.
With mass storage mode off, when I plugged it in, Windows detected a
new device and went through the installing drivers process.
That finished successfully.
But when I plug the phone in again, I'm still not seeing an ABD type
device in Device Manager.
I do though get two new entries in Device Manager...

Storage Volumes -> Generic Volume
and
Modems -> LGE Android Platform USB Modem

These disappear when I unplug the phone.

But still no ADB entry and Klink still isn't detecting it.

Ok.  It sounds like we're close.

Could you make sure that USB debugging is enabled on your phone?  Perhaps Klink is not able to take you to the right settings menu to get it enabled and perhaps the mode was turned off inadvertently.

You can do the following:

- From your phone's home screen, press the phone's Menu key.
- Choose Settings
- Choose Applications
- Choose Development
- Make sure that USB debugging is enabled.

Device Manager should show one of two things when USB debugging is enabled:

1) Your phone will show up near the top under the "ADB Interface", which doesn't seem to be your situation.
2) Your phone will show up under "Other devices" with a question mark next to it.  It may come under several different labels, but the possibilities should be descriptive enough to identify your device.  (eg., Android, ADB, LG Phone, etc.)

If #2, could you do the following:
- Right-click on the unknown device representing your phone and choose "Properties".
- Click on the "Details" tab at the top
- In the list selection box near the middle of the window, select something that says "Device Instance Id".

You will see a line like:

USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C8D&MI_01\7&140A9739&1&0001

Could you tell me what the VID_XXXX and PID_YYYY and MI_ZZ values are?  This will help me find drivers for your phone.

USB Debugging had got turned off somehow Grrr!

Anyway, all sorted now.
Went back to the beginning, removed everything, turned Mass storage
off and USB debugging on.
Then installed the driver software from LGdriver.exe, then plugged
phone in and it installed drivers including “Android Sooner Single ADB
Interface”.
After that, could see the ADB entry in device manager, which I never
did before.
Installed Klink on the PC and hey presto! Simple!

Have now purchased the full version and all is working fine.

Many thanks.

Thanks for getting back to me, Bob.  I'm glad that everything was resolved!

Really quickly, did Klink's Android software not take you to a settings menu to enable "USB debugging"?  Instructions are supposed to appear when you press the "Start" button from within the Android app whenever "USB debugging" is disabled.  It'd be helpful for me to know if your version of the LG Optimus doesn't detect things properly.

Thanks!

It didn't take me to the settings menu as I know I had it on
originally, it somehow got itself turned off. Maybe me getting
confused.
The main problem was getting the drivers installed. Once I did it the
standard way - install drivers - plug in USB phone, then everything
worked fine. Not really sure why it didn't work first time.
I can only assume the problems were me rushing and not doing things
properly.
I've installed it now on 3 laptops, easy as anything.

With regards it taking you to the settings menu if USB Debugging is
switched off, I've just tried turning it off, then started Klink and I
can confirm it firstly shows
"Before Starting: Tap to enable USB debugging" near the bottom of the
screen.

If you now tap Start, it comes up with a big screen telling you it's
taking you to the settings menu so you can turn it on.
I guess this is how it's meant to work.

Hi, Bob.

Okay.  Thanks for the feedback!  I just wanted to make sure that Klink was indeed detecting the state of the USB debugging setting with your phone.  It seems to be doing that, so all is good.

Glad that everything's going more smoothly now!
