Hello.
I am 100% new to "tethering" and not even sure I understand it so I am
here for help. I purchased an HTC Flyer (Android) Tablet from Best
Buy and want to know if there is a way to "piggy back" it off of my 3G
network that is on my Verizon Blackberry. Is this what is referred to
as tethering? The Klink app called Tether Without Root is on the
marketplace on my Android tablet so I was halfway assuming it would
work with my tablet. But I cant see any clear cut description that
the app will allow 3G connectivity on my tablet (when not in a wi-fi
area) via my Blackberry.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Klink can only run on an Android device (a Blackberry is not an
Android device). Klink is designed to run on the device that is
providing the Internet connection. So, hypothetically, if your Android
tablet had a 3G connection that you wanted to share with your
computer, you could do that with Klink, because the Internet
connection itself would originate from the device running Klink.

I don't think Klink is the app you're looking for. Since you probably
can't connect your blackberry and your tablet over USB, I think you
would need to purchase an app for Blackberry that can provide an
ad-hoc wifi hotspot sharing the Blackberry's internet connection, and
then use the wifi network exposed by the Blackberry to connect your
Android device. I have never used a Blackberry device so you are on
your own there.

Kevin Ko, the author of Klink, may have some additional insights; he
frequents this list.

Hi, April.

Sean is absolutely correct (Thanks, Sean!).  Klink is only for Android devices that already have access to the Internet, whether through cell or Wifi, and it allows a regular PC to access the Internet through the device.

From my understanding, you only have a data plan on your Blackberry, and you want to tether your Flyer to it.  That combination is going to be a difficult one to handle.

For your Blackberry, you have a couple of tethering options:

- PdaNet for Blackberry - Supports Bluetooth DUN
- EasyTether for Blackberry - Supports Bluetooth PAN

Based on what I've read, it's very much hit or miss whether an Android device will support one of these bluetooth modes for accessing the Internet.  Your best bet is to look around to see if your Flyer natively supports one of these Bluetooth modes.  If it does, buy the appropriate app for your Blackberry and use that to tether.  You shouldn't have to buy an app for your Android tablet, as the magic will occur in your phone.

That said, I now own an Android Honeycomb tablet, and I will try to come up with a solution for Android tablet and Android phone owners, in case you ever pick up an Android phone in the future.  Don't count on this any time soon.  It'll be ready when it's ready, as I have some Klink updates to take care of before I get started.
