Hi everyone, first off, thanks for your responses to my previous post and sorry for the delay. I'm still figuring out Google groups, sad but true!

I'm encountering another FAVE issue. In a nutshell, for some of the files I am attempting to align, 1) the textgrid is coming back empty; 2) the errorlog returns all the annotation units as failed alignments; and 3) the unknown words files sometimes are normal, and sometimes nonsensical (containing only something like the following):

ⵉ㴭㴽㴽㴽㴽㴽㴽㴽㠵㌱㤷㜳㈰㠰㌷ㄸ㤱㴲ⴽ

I'm not sure what's going on. The text files and sound files I'm uploading, which I generated from ELAN, are normal. The interactions themselves shouldn't be causing a problem - there are long pauses and background noise (like music), but similar files haven't given me trouble.

I encountered this problem with files uploaded pre-website fix last week, so I re-generated them and tried to align again, with the same errors. Other files I aligned since the website fix have had no problems.

All suggestions gratefully welcomed. I'm on the home stretch of this project and these are the final files that need to be put to bed. Thank you!

Hi Amelia,

I was having a problem recently where ELAN was giving bad UTF-8 encoding of the text file output. Sometimes the text file looked fine in TextEdit but gave dictionary check errors like the one you copied; sometimes the whole transcript file looked like that. I had just updated ELAN not long ago, and reinstalling it seems to have fixed this. Maybe this is the source of your problem as well? Anyone know if the website is still having problems?

Best,
Hilary

Hi Hilary,

I recently had what sounds like a similar problem with extracting but not alignment. I was getting text files full of nonsensical stuff instead of formant values. Manually setting the encoding to Latin1 in Gvim did the trick. Maybe we had the same or a similar problem?

For the alignment issue above, I reinstalled ELAN but no dice. Ingrid kindly helped me out and I'm hoping to be able to handle it myself in future - have to find out a bit more, though!

I think the website is up and running again, and I'm not encountering issues at the moment.

Thanks for your advice!
Amelia

I'm having the same problem with anlignment. I've reinstalled ELAN, re-cloned FAVE from github and am still getting nonsense files in unknown.txt Does anyone know what the equivalent to "Manually setting the encoding to Latin1 in Gvim did the trick." for Windows would be? I'm guessing it's a setting in Visual Studio but I'm struggling to find it.
