Good grief, doesn't he ever learn. He is becoming an embarrassment.

The Pope is right, the indians are better off with the ancient pagan
religion eradicated in favor of the true faith of Christ. Trying to
rediscover and to restore old superstitions is a step backward, not
forward. Let the few indians who are upset complain. The Pope says
what must be said. Christianity is not about blanket toleration but
about proclaiming the Gospel both in and out of season.

As for what was said about Islam; the subsequent violence proved a
point that was only meant as a historical aside. Moslem fanatics are
everywhere and they are not to be trusted. The Pope preached peace
and they ranted, "Death to the Pope!"

The embarassment is again and again, on the other foot.

Fr. Joe said, "the indians are better off with the ancient pagan

religion eradicated in favor of the true faith of Christ."

In other words, the end justifies the means?

Fardog you sound like a radical.

now a days people think GOD is just a fairy tale as in "you believe in
him, he's real for you, but I don't". if GOD wrote scripture, then how
can you say GOD isn't real?. After reading St.Pio's letters, in one he
says "Just like believers in their hearts have faith that God is real,
the existence of GOD is a certainty."

today's culture GOD is misinterpreted, while the liberals mold GOD
into their image and promote him they contradict the Gospel. St.John
writes that no one knows GOD or seen him except the One who revealed
him. what GOD is, what he stands for is summed up in Jesus The Messiah
actions. his intelligence and I have to admit is far greater than any
living creature.

we like to call ourselves advance, modern but we still fail to imitate
the Gospel, The Gospel was written before it was physically written.
The Gospel, is the oldest and most precious WORD ever generated.
without GOD morales don't matter. without Morales we can not be what
GOD wants us to be. even at this sad state we can not be called Child
of the Living God which in my opinion is the greatest award ever
bestowed on any human being.

All I am saying is that the Gospel takes precedence over indigenous
pagan cult and culture.

This is a sore point between anthropologists and missionaries.

Indeed, I had a priest-friend who became an anthropologist, rejected
the missionary mandate of the Church, and then he left ministry
altogether. The last time I saw him, he had left the Church and no
longer even believed in God.

It is unfortunate that disease often accompanied expansion. Europeans
did not know what we know today about such things.

It is tragic that opportunists and the sword often accompanied those
who brought the Gospel, but I have to think matters would have been
far worse without the sobering influence of the Church.

The message of Christ matters. The offer of salvation has infinite
value.

I think Mother Teresa's approach to other cultures and religions is a
better way.
Thanks for your response Father Joe and Gio. As my father used to
say. "Thats what makes horse races."

Actually Mother Teresa or is it Blessed Mother Teresa? used to baptize
(or get them baptize) the people she brought in who were dying if they
were non christians , muslims, indian pagan followers. she caught alot
of flak for that because "it wasn't politically correct". thought I
don't the dying cared since now they are in heaven...

Alas, if what you say is true, then one of my heroes, Mother Teresa is
a fraud. That is sad. To take advantage of those who are weak and
dying and baptize them when it goes against the person's whole life
and belief is reprehensible.

dude do you think straight?

Mother Teresa is not a fraud, she would ask the people SHE took in,
the people no one cared about, they weren't christians. She would ask
them if they want "a ticket of st.peter". Baptizing doesn't work if
the person rejects it.

the flak came from indian pagan followers.
