There's far more to being a great vocalist - to me - than being technically great, having a super high voice or being a virtuoso. Ray HAD all of those things at one point. But though he's lost range - and I think we've had this discussion before - he's gained in emotional versatility and resonance, as well as a powerful, empathetic mid-range and just an overall vibe that makes his vocal s, much like Steve Perry (Journey), very distinct and impactful. For me that matters far more than having the ability to hit supersonic speeds and notes. As singers age, their vocal range decreases, but usually a good vocalist will make up for this by utilizing their mid and lower registers more. Of course, yes, smoking doesn't help, and Ray has mentioned this in numerous interviews. I think his vocal presence is far more realistic, grounded and inspirational now than it was, say, during NO EXIT. He used mid-range quite often even in his younger days and I think it was more appropriate even back then. ;)

You can accuse John of being a bit over the top.
You can maybe be put off by the somewhat nasaly / Maideny tendencies.
But Arch is undoubtedly a technical virtuoso who still has all the range and then some.
I assume cigarettes are to blame, but the same can't be said for the great Ray Alder
(sorry Ray).
