Save any data, close any open programs, and restart the computer by using a wired USB mouse (if available) or Bluetooth mouse if it is already installed. If not, press and hold the power button down for at least 15 seconds to turn the computer off (you lose any data that is not saved).

Also, some laptops and tablets with keyboards have added gesture features to the touchpad hardware and drivers. A few of these features are two or three-finger scrolling, pinch zoom, circle zoom, rotate, and swiping. These new features may be the reason for the erratic cursor movement since most are turned on by default. You can disable or modify the way that the features work in the touchpad driver properties.

Select the tab below that matches the operating system that is installed on your computer. Follow the steps to ensure that the settings are correct to prevent the cursor from moving around erratically while typing.

The utility is not installed. In that case, see Dell Knowledge Base article How to Download and Install Dell Drivers. The Dell Touchpad Driver/Utility is listed under Mouse, Keyboard, and Input Devices. You can also try:

That your newer computer has a Dell Precision Touchpad. To determine whether your computer has the Dell Precision Touchpad, see Dell Knowledge Base article How to Use the Precision Touchpad Features in Windows and see The Cursor Moves Around Erratically While Typing on the Notebook Keyboard section for instructions on how to change the settings when your computer does have the Dell Precision Touchpad.

Ensure that the latest driver for the touchpad is installed (see notes below). You may need to use an external USB or Bluetooth mouse. For more information, see Dell Knowledge Base article How to Download and Install Dell Drivers.

Save any data, close any open programs, and restart the computer. When you do not have a mouse or touch screen, you may have to hold the power button down for at least 15 seconds to turn the computer off, and you lose any data that is not saved.

When performing the preceding steps and the touchpad still does not work correctly, you can use a restore point to take the operating system to a time the touchpad worked (in Windows 10, it is called refreshing the operating system). If that does not work, you must reinstall your operating system. For more information, see Dell Knowledge Base article Factory Reset, Restore, or Reinstall Microsoft Windows on a Dell computer.

Save any data, close any open programs, and restart the computer. When the touchpad and keyboard do not respond at all, and you do not have an external mouse, you may have to press and hold the power button down for at least 15 seconds to turn the computer off, and you lose any data that is not saved.

I can't seem to change the Touchpad settings on my Dell Latitude 5480 running Windows 10 1809. When I click the Dell Touchpad settings link below it triggers a prompt to find an app to open "alpstouchpadsettings"

I ran into the same problem and searched all around for a solution. You need to install the Windows 10 app (from the store). This will enable you to run the program from the tray or simply searching from start. -us/p/dell-touchpad-settings/9p1tnxt0309v?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

The pictures will be visible after approval by a moderator. But have you tried this. Click on search (Cortana) and type in touchpad. Then click on the touchpad settings window. The settings can be accessed from there.

Unfortunately that's not an option for me or my firm. Infosec blocks the MS store 6 ways from sunday - firewall appliances, group policy, and even some 3rd party app locker/permission agents on each workstation. So now all my freshly imaged laptops (including my own 7370) are lacking what i consider basic functionality - can't scroll w/ 2 fingers, or any other multi-touch gestures/actions - REALLY annoying! All i wanted to do was have the latest drivers, but in turn that took away the touchpad app.

Is the touchpad app available any other way, such as a regular exe or appx I can download from the driver page, and then distribute w/ sccm? moving apps to the MS store might be convenient for Dell, but not everyone has access to the store!

I briefly considered downloading an older touchpad driver and injecting that into my new driver packages, but security would be on my case the instant they found out. Next best thing I thought of was getting that older driver and ripping out JUST the touchpad app files, then packaging them up myself in sccm. i shouldn't have to go to all that effort for this!

I have the same dilemma - needing to install the Dell Touchpad Settings app on a Win10 LTSC machine w/o Store access. There is a method we can use to manually download the .appx from the MS Store, which is as follows:

Its a hassle to have to go through this long process just to be able to manage touchpad settings but so far I think its the only workaround I've found that might work on a box without Store access. I already tried using the traditional desktop application for managing touchpad settings that is installed with the driver package (C:\Windows\System32\DellTPad\DellTPad.exe), but although we can launch it and change settings from there, none of those settings changes made through that app seem to have any effect for the touchpads on newer model laptops (a Latitude 5591 in my case). So it appears we do indeed need to use the Store app. It shouldn't be this complicated to something so simple but unfortunately that seems to be par for the course with Microsoft lately... having to do all sorts of hacks and workarounds just to achieve the standard/basic/expected functionality.

Another update - unfortunately it appears that the issue of settings not taking effect can happen with either the Win32 app (DellTPad.exe) or the UWP app (Dell Touchpad Settings). It seems to depend on the hardware but it looks like newer hardware is not supporting the settings configured via these apps anymore. And results are different on different hardware - e.g. on a 5591, touchpad settings in the Dell app didn't work but pointer stick settings did, but on the 5400, neither touchpad nor pointer stick settings had any effect.

Instead we must configure the same settings via the native Settings app in Win10 (although it doesn't include all the settings that the Dell app did). I have a case open w/ Dell on this currently to see if we can get a bug fix request on the app since the native Win10 tools do not replace all the functionality of the Dell app.

One more update - the case resolution was that we should be using the Dell Touchpad Assistant app from the MS Store, instead of the Dell Touchpad Settings app, at least on newer hardware (specifically on the 5591). Using this app, we can either enable the Windows Settings management of the touchpad, or optionally revert back to the legacy settings where we control it through the Dell Touchpad Assistant app. And we can also configure pointer stick settings via this app. All of the above works properly on the 5591.

However, on the 5400 (and perhaps other newer hardware), the pointer stick settings in the Dell Touchpad Assistant app don't work, so we need to use yet another app - the Dell PointStick Assistant app, to configure point stick settings on that model.

So, using a conjunction of apps we can configure all necessary settings on new hardware. But this still leaves the issue of machines that don't have Store access - they have to get their hands on the .appx to install it in some other way.

Today, for some strange reason, I am no longer able to scroll with my touchpad. I went to control panel>mouse, but the first tab is "buttons." My tab for "Dell Touchpad" seems to have disappeared. Now I cannot scroll or adjust the sensitivity of my touchpad. It's very sad. I loved that scroll feature so much... can anyone help? I tried to do this: "Goto > Drivers & Downloads > Choose Model > Choose OS (XP/Vista). Look under Input Device Drivers," but nothing changed. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1525 and running Vista

I am experiencing the same issue (cannot scroll with the touch pad) on my Latitude E6400. Also, when typing, often my cursor will suddenly jump around. I looked for the settings to make the touch pad less sensitive, but cannot find any. Where will I find a download to re-install the touch pad? Thanks for your help!

I started experiencing this however after I loaded Windows 7 onto my XPS 1530. My touchpad scroll worked perfectly prior to the switch to Windows 7 and now I can't find any tabs/settings for touchpad at all in control panel...
