This website provides evidence-based information and quality products that help to prevent and rehabilitate back pain. All back pain has a cause. Professor McGill dedicated 32 years to investigating how the spine works, the mechanisms of pain, and proven ways to eliminate pain and restore pain-free activity.
It varies in severity from acute, sub-acute to chronic. People of all ages may be affected and it is often influenced by a range of factors including an acute injury (causing muscle or joint damage), poor posture (leading to wear and tear), core weakness (placing too much pressure on the spine) or a disc bulge.
The constellation of symptoms and possible causes makes diagnosis and treatment difficult. Developed by a renowned spine specialist, the Stuart McGill Method is a set of specific exercises to help patients recover from lower back pain by strengthening the muscles that surround the spine and reducing the risk of future injury.
The McGill Method recommends three exercises based on the concept of improving muscle strength and support around the spine. In particular, these exercises focus on the transverse abdominals (deep core), obliques (side of abdominals) and multifidus (small muscles which stabilise the spine).
At Dr Miki Humphrey Chiropractic, we use all these exercises for lower back pain and injuries when necessary and also recommend them as a way of preventing an injury from occurring in the first place.
If you would like help with an injury or need advice concerning rehabilitation, we would love to help. Chiropractic treatments use spinal adjustments, exercises and stretches that strengthen muscles, release tension and improve wellbeing. Stuart McGill is a distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Waterloo and the chief scientific officer at Backfitpro where he specializes in evaluating complex cases of lower back pain from across the globe. In this episode, Stuart engages in a deep exploration of lower back pain, starting with the anatomy of the lower back, the workings of the spine, the pathophysiology of back pain, and areas of vulnerability. He challenges the concept of nonspecific back pain, emphasizing the importance of finding a causal relationship between injury and pain. Stuart highlights compelling case studies of the successful treatment of complex cases of lower back pain, reinforcing his conviction that nobody needs to suffer endlessly. He also covers the importance of strength and stability, shares his favorite exercises to prescribe to patients, and provides invaluable advice for maintaining a healthy spine.
Stuart McGill earned a Bachelor of Physical Education from the University of Toronto. He earned a Masters in Science at the University of Ottawa to earn a Masters in Science, then a Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo. Dr. McGill stayed at the University of Waterloo as a professor of Kinesiology and Health Sciences for 32 years. He is now a distinguished professor emeritus.
His laboratory and experimental research clinic investigated issues related to the causal mechanisms of back pain, how to rehabilitate back-pained people and enhance injury resilience and performance. During his academic career he authored over 240 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers, received many international awards, and mentored over 40 graduate students.
His work continues at Backfitpro Inc. where he is the chief scientific officer. He sees elite athletes and people with difficult back cases. He has also authored several books on the mechanics of pain, fitness, and performance as it pertains to the back including: Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance, Low Back Disorders, Back Mechanic, and Gift of Injury. I absolutely loved this podcast. I have had ongoing issues with my low back for the last 3 years. I am now 60 years old and have read The BACK Mechanic by Stuart Mcgill and have implemented his techniques. I have been able to manage my flare ups better both physically and mentally. I would like to know more about training adaptations to help guide me in my workouts. Mainly I struggle with balancing my strength, mobility and flexibility training.
Wow is all I can say! I had my own severe back journey and the content resonated with me the whole way through. Ultimately it was a journey of self discovery and although a lay person I came to conclusions similar enough in many ways to yours. Please keep up the great work I applaud both of you for giving hope to those who deserve a fuller life. ????
