Konidela Ram Charan[1][2] (born 27 March 1985) is an Indian actor and film producer who primarily works in Telugu cinema. He is one of the highest-paid actors in Indian cinema[3][4] and has featured in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2013. Charan is the recipient of several awards, including three Filmfare Awards and two Nandi Awards.
Ram Charan was educated at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, Chennai,[12] Lawrence School, Lovedale,[13] The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet,[14] and at the St. Mary's College, Hyderabad.[15] He also attended Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting school in Mumbai.[16][17] He was presented with an honorary doctorate from Vels University, Chennai in April 2024.[18]
He starred alongside his father Chiranjeevi in Acharya (2022) directed by Koratala Siva.[101] Chiranjeevi confirmed that Charan would be doing the role in June 2020.[102] In February 2021, he signed a film with director S. Shankar, titled as Game Changer, under the production of Dil Raju's Sri Venkateswara Creations.[103] The filming is scheduled to complete by 2024.[104]
Charan is an equestrian.[105] The Hans India reported that he had learnt horse-riding in his childhood.[106] In September 2011, he started his own polo team Ram Charan Hyderabad Polo Riding Club.[107][108] He also served on the board of directors of Maa TV.[109] In 2009, he became a spokesperson for Pepsi's advertisement campaigns.[110]
Turbo Megha Airways Private Limited was incorporated in March 2013, with Charan and Vankayalapati Umesh as promoters.[111][112] In early July 2015, the airline adopted the brand name TruJet.[113] It received its air operator's certificate for regional operations from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation on 7 July 2015.[114] He is also the spokesman and co-owner of the obstacle running series Devil's circuit.[115]
In May 2023, he announced a partnership with Vikram Reddy, of UV Creations, to launch the production house, V Mega Pictures.[122] Within the same month, V Mega Pictures announced its collaboration with Abhishek Agarwal Arts, for the production of their first film, The India House, starring Nikhil Siddharth and Anupam Kher as Shyamji Krishna Varma.[123]
He often organises blood donation camps.[124] On 26 May 2021, Charan launched oxygen banks along with his father Chiranjeevi,[125] through Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust.[126] Started initially in Anantapur and Guntur districts of Andhra Pradesh, they were later launched various other regions in India,[127] including Telangana.[128] These were launched due to the shortage of oxygen cylinders, ventilators and concentrators, during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in India.[129]
Ram Charan is married to Upasana Kamineni, the vice-chairman of Apollo Charity and Chief Editor of B Positive magazine. Kamineni is the daughter of Shobana Kamineni and the granddaughter of Prathap C. Reddy, founder and executive chairman of India's first corporate hospital chain, Apollo Hospitals.[130][131] They were engaged in December 2011, and subsequently married on 14 June 2012 at the Temple Trees Farm House in Hyderabad.[132] According to an article published by NewsX, both Charan and Upasana were friends until ninth grade in the same school at Chennai, Tamil Nadu.[16] On 20 June 2023, the couple had their first child, a daughter.[133][134][135]
Ram Charan takes part in the 41-days-long Ayyappa Deeksha (Vratham), which is done on a yearly basis in Sabarimala, Kerala.[136] He started this practice in 2008.[137] Charan stated that "this spiritual living is like a detox holiday for him to de-stress, take healthy and simple food and maintaining inner peace from his chaotic shooting schedules and uncertain mundane things" and said that his father Chiranjeevi had inspired him in following the deeksha.[138][139]
Charan was featured in GQ India's Best Dressed Men list in 2016.[140] He is popularly referred as the "Mega Power Star" in the media.[141] The title is the combination of "Mega Star"[142] [of his father Chiranjeevi] and "Power Star"[143] [of his Uncle Pawan Kalyan].[144] He has appeared in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2013.[145] He was ranked twelfth on the Times' 50 Most Desirable Men for the year 2012,[146] twenty-third in 2013,[147] thirtieth in 2014,[148] thirty-eighth in 2015.[149] After a break of three years, he was again featured on the list in 2019 at eighteenth position.[150]
At an event held in January 2016 in Hyderabad, novelist Yandamuri Veerendranath commented that "Charan is surviving on his father Chiranjeevi's popularity".[151] Upon the release of Japanese dubbed version of Magadheera in Japan, Charan received wide popularity in the region.[152] Japanese food company Ezaki Glico[153] printed Charan's photo on their biscuit packets.[154][155] Belonging to a film family, he admitted that "No two people are born with the same calibre and can achieve the same stardom", regarding nepotism in the film industry.[156] In July 2022, Raveena Tandon said that "Yash, Prabhas and Ram Charan are now pan-Indian names".[157][158]
Game Changer is an upcoming Indian Telugu political action thriller film directed by S. Shankar and produced by Sri Venkateswara Creations. The film stars Ram Charan in triple roles, leading an ensemble cast that includes Kiara Advani, Anjali, S. J. Suryah, Srikanth, Jayaram, Sunil, Samuthirakani and Nassar.
The film was officially announced in February 2021 under the tentative title RC15, as it is Charan's 15th film as the lead actor, and the official title was announced in March 2023. Principal photography commenced in October 2021 and concluded in July 2024 after years of production hell. Filming locations included Hyderabad, New Zealand, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, and Chandigarh. The film has music composed by Thaman S, cinematography handled by Tirru and editing by Shameer Muhammed. The film is scheduled to release in December 2024.
Tirru was signed on as the cinematographer, marking his maiden collaboration with Shankar.[14] The remaining technical team of the film consisted of editor Shameer Muhammed,[15] action choreographer duo Anbariv, and art director Avinash Kolla.[16] Thaman S would score the music in his first collaboration with Shankar as music director.[17] Dance choreographers of the film include Jani Master, Prem Rakshith, Prabhu Deva, Bosco Martis, Ganesh Acharya, and Sandy Master.[18][16]
Charan reportedly plays a dual role as a father and son.[19] In July 2021 it was announced that Kiara Advani was signed on to be the lead actress which marks her second collaboration with Charan after Vinaya Vidheya Rama.[20][21] Anjali was cast in a pivotal role, while Sunil, Srikanth, Jayaram, and Naveen Chandra were all confirmed to be a part of the film.[22] In February 2022, S. J. Suryah was approached for a role and was later confirmed to be part of the film in September 2022.[23][24]
The film was formally launched with a muhurat shot on 8 September 2021 at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad with a traditional pooja ceremony attended by Ranveer Singh, Chiranjeevi, and S. S. Rajamouli.[25][26]
The third schedule for the film commenced in February 2022.[31] Planned for about 20 days, the shoot took place in Andhra Pradesh at Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Kovvur and other nearby places of West Godavari and East Godavari districts.[32][33] Later the same month, it was reported that filming for Indian 2, also directed by Shankar, which the production was halted for two and a half years,[34] would take place after wrapping up the film shoot.[35] Charan took a break from filming to take part in the success celebrations of RRR and returned to filming in April. Charan and Advani began a 20-day schedule at Amritsar in April, to film their college portions.[36][37] For undisclosed reasons, R. Rathnavelu joined the unit in Amritsar to complete the remaining portions in place of Tirru.[38] In May, the crew shot a schedule in Visakhapatnam.[39]
By July 2022, 60% of the filming was completed with Shankar intending to wrap up filming by December. Earlier the same month, a massive song involving around 1000 dancers was shot in Punjab and Hyderabad. After the song shoot, an action sequence involving 1200 fighters was planned.[40] [41] In August, Shankar confirmed that he would be shooting both Game Changer and Indian 2, simultaneously.[42] The filming was planned to resume in early September in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.[42] In November 2022, 10 days of a schedule was filmed in New Zealand, where the team picturized an expensive song across multiple exotic locations in the country.[41]
In February 2023, filming resumed with a few scenes shot at Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, Visakhapatnam, followed by Simhachalam and Charminar.[43][44] A few pictures of scenes from the set were leaked online during the filming at the university.[45] In March 2023, a song involving 100 dancers, choreographed by Prabhu Deva, was shot.[46] In April 2023, Shankar revealed that he would be shooting the climactic scenes soon.[47] On 26 April 2023, filming of the climactic scenes started under the supervision of Anbariv, in a special set in Shamshabad.[48] Charan shot high combat scenes with 1200 fighters for the same.[49] On 9 May, filming of the climax was wrapped.[50] In July, an action sequence choreographed by Peter Hein was wrapped in Hyderabad.[51] Mysore schedule was started on 23 November,[52] and was wrapped early December.[53] In late December, a short schedule in Hyderabad, featuring Srikanth, Samuthirakani, S. J. Suryah, and others was wrapped up.[54] The final schedule was completed in July 2024.[55]
The new film was launched in the presence of several dignitaries including Boney Kapoor, Chiranjeevi, Upasana Konidela, directors Shankar and Sukumar. The film is being presented by Mythri Movie Makers and will be produced by Venkata Satish Kilaru on behalf of Vriddhi Cinemas and Sukumar Writings.
