That riff, a cross between a sitar and a revving dirt bike, is the most recognizable thing about the song. For such a ubiquitous hit, the lyrics continually surprise beyond the titular chorus. So much so that when Cat Power covered the tune in 2000, slicing off the refrain, it was a strange new poem about the anxiety of commercials and subliminal advertising. This from the first rock band to develop a brand logo, a pair of juicy red lips.

Finding the best karaoke songs to belt out is an art form. However, the pressure of selecting the right song to sing can often be overwhelming. Do you want to sing a Whitney Houston ballad? Do you want to get the rest of the room singing with a Journey hit? These are the questions to ask yourself before you take the mic.

cruise ship karaoke is pretty hit and miss. It all depends on the crowd on that particular sailing. You may have a lot of kids, or drunk young people just goofing around. Or a much older crowd for oldies all night long. Sometimes you come across really good singers that think they may get discovered and sing all night long. A couple of times, I have seen some pros up there.

In my experience on cruise ships, there are fewer people wanting to sing, so I get more frequent turns to perform, which I like. Also, often the same crowd will come to karaoke on multiple nights, so you can get to know the other singers a bit more. If you enter a karaoke competition, the winner is determined by how loudly the audience is screaming for each contestant, which means whoever has the most/loudest friends will win, not necessarily the person who is the best singer.

Unfortunately, I don't have a favorite karaoke song at this time but I will tell you which one I can't stand and that's Sweet Caroline. I swear this song gets picked out every time I go to karaoke night and Margaritaville comes in at 2nd. No offense to Neil Diamond and Jimmy Buffett fans, but when these songs are being played, it just drives me to buy another drink! :p

Far, Far Away.................since in reality 95% of all karaoke "voices" should never leave the confines of their own shower curtains. If their friends were really friends they would tell them the truth.......you simply can't sing! But for the few with nice voices sing on America!!!

I love to watch karaoke. I do enjoy a really good singer. But just as much I enjoy a mediocre singer who really performs well and entertains the crowd. And then there's the horrible singers who only half-know their song. I've seen some who make me laugh do hard I cry

I do Carole King, Pat Benatar, and Peter, Paul, and Mary typically, plus a wide variety of whatever interests me. My fianc is a former professional musician and choir director and we're working on some duets for our upcoming cruises.

Below is a list of songs in our book, along with links to famous recordings of each song. The arrangement we play closely matches the recording. Click on the YouTube or Spotify icon to go to the recording on that platform.

About the recordings listed above, versus what we have in the Top Shelf Big Band book: the charts in our book match, fairly closely, the recordings listed above. There are the same number of bars of introduction before the vocalist enters, they are in the same key (unless noted above), they have the same roadmap, etc. In some cases, the orchestration of our chart is different. For example, the recording may use a stage orchestra (i.e., with strings), while our chart is reorchestrated for big band instruments.

Who better to kick off our Best 90s Karaoke Songs list than THE biggest start to emerge from that decade, Ms Spears? Baby One More Time is one of those songs that ages like a fine wine. It just gets better and better with age.

Think you have what it takes to take on Mariah Carey in the karaoke booth? The diva who can famously sing through five octaves gave us the gift of the smooth R&B ballad Without You in the 90s. Best get that vocal warm up in.

Boy, the 90s sure was the decade of the power singer. Following in the footsteps of Mariah is her pop successor and she-of-equal-belting-power, Christina Aguilera. Genie In A Bottle was the breakout song that launched Christina into the stratosphere.

"Celebrity Skin" was my first karaoke song and, in select bars, the only entry from Courtney Love's band Hole. In hipper karaoke joints you can sometimes go full force with "Violet," but "Celebrity Skin" is a safe bet with a slightly less jagged rock edge. Hell, even your boring gal pals who plan to "turn it into one drink" because they need to "get up at 7 a.m. for work" can get into that riff.

What's neat about "Edge of Seventeen" is that it'll absolutely divide a crowd between those who are witchy old souls and those who mistake it for "Bootylicious." What's also funny is that there are bunch of clusters of words that are indecipherable without subtitles karaoke screens graciously lay out for you. Realistically, everyone is still going to stumble into a lot of gibberish until you reach crucial parts like,"From the moment that I first laid EYES. ON. YOU."
