Fast Friends,

It’s coming!!!   A Great Ride for a Great Cause!!!  The 4th Annual LDA Finger Lakes Cycling Classic Road Race and Tour!!! Please note the date change. Previous Cycle Classics were held on Father’s Day. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, June 30 at the Hunt Hollow Ski Resort. The course for this “Citizens Road Race” is a 36-miler around Honeoye Lake that offers some challenging climbs and beautiful scenery.  The race features a controlled rolling start with a pace car and computer chip timing.  Riders may enter the race as a team (minimum 3 members).   Prizes are given to top finishers.  Those who would prefer to “tour” can opt to do the same 36 mile “race” course or a shorter and flatter 22 mile course.   Lunch, event tee shirts, door prizes and other goodies are provided to all participants and all is provided for the very affordable $40.00 Registration Fee. Several FF’s have participated in this event in the past and all have been quite impressed with its course, organization and support.

A direct link to the Cycle Classic registration page is: http://www.ldarochester.org/news_events/2013_cycle_classic.php This link also provides a link for downloading the course map(s) as well as a link to BikeReg.com for convenient “on line” registration.

FYI, LDA (Learning Disability Association) is a not-for-profit agency helping individuals with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and developmental disabilities in the 10 county Genesee Valley area seek personal success in school, work, and community living via an array of services including: Education, Employment, Residential Services, and Service Coordination.

Please register today for this Great Ride for a Great Cause!!!

Any fast friends interested in doing a team for this race?

Teams must be at least 3 people (no max) and they take the times of the top 3 finishers.

I've never raced, but this looks like a good reason to try one, with a modest goal to not get passed by those touring that start 5 minutes after the race.

Looks like a nice event with a challenging route. Not sure about the team thing yet but there is not much on the RBC schedule for that day. So I will strongly consider it.

While I'm at it let me make a plug for the Crosby Street Special on June 29, the day before the race. Since I am the ride leader I will definitely be there to ride this classic RBC ride. If you haven't done this ride yet please consider it now because this its a classic ride with some challenging hills and awesome scenery.

Hopefully I'll see on both rides.

A FF team would KILL!  I hope you get three or more to field a team. Larry has thrown the gauntlet!!

I did the LDA classic the first year - not as a racer, though the female team was so thin I "mighta been a contendah."  But I digress.  Not only was the course fabulous, the prizes were good and the food was ample.  Not to mention that it's a great cause.  I wish I could be there to root you guys on.  A family event will keep me away this year.

GO FOR IT!

Hey this is a beautiful course- and challenging. Did this with Cindy the first year out and we enjoyed it lots. And,  there were  good eats and prizes. You fast- fast friends should definitely have a team. You'd sweep the top!! Best wishes! May ride it for the 'tour.'

As soon as we get a third Dwight, I'll register and set up the team. Otto - are you ready to commit?

Since this is a fundraiser and we're throwing down gauntlets….

Dave Lamb, how about joining the ride and making the team name Wheezers and Geezers?

It's only $40, and no need to hit up family and friends again.

I have a family activity that will prevent me from participating. Is there a way to make a donation to the LDA?

Great idea, and yes - I donated in honor of someone a couple of years ago.  It would be fun to donate in support of a FF team!  I'd do that too.

Let me ask Krystyna Staub what's the best way to donate and get back to FF.  Krystyna is the Director of the ride at LDA.  She was out of the office last week so it might be tough to get in touch today.

How about "licensing" the W&G name for this ride Dave?

Although it won't be the same without you.

Its too soon for me to commit yet. As I noted I lead a hilly ride the day before the LDA event so I might not have the best legs to support a strong team effort.

First, much thanks to Larry (and to Cindy) for talking this event up with the FF’s, to Dwight for answering the challenge and to all other Fast Friends (you know who you are) who might yet throw their helmets into the ring...

Second, I second the notion of the FF team entering as the W&G’s!!

Last, Dave, you can easily make a donation.      Go to this Link:  http://www.ldarochester.org/news_events/2013_cycle_classic.php.    Click on the Bike Reg icon.  Around half way down the initial screen you’ll see the  “Donation” option under  EVENT ITEMS.    Easy peasy....

I tried it several years ago. It's a really nice event. The good news is that I could stick with the pack for the first 18 miles, until I hit the hill on Rt 33. The racing teams are quite fast. I finished somewhere in the middle, so there are slower riders! -- Bob

So are you in this year Bob? You got some hill training last Saturday.

Looking at the map, the Rte 33 hill out of Honeoye is where I expect to get dropped as well.

What is proper etiquette in racing when being passed up on a hill as would
be the case if I was to "race"...to be kicked to the curb or out dangling at
the center line? I would not want to get in anyone's way...a race that
starts at a ski resort is not likely for me...if it was salt flats it would
make it more palatable :^)

Is the question, "What is the correct lane position when racing on the open road?"

Never having raced in other than time trials, I will need to defer to more experienced cyclists for an answer to this one.

Meanwhile, I gotta say, this is an excellent question.

Hmm...being at the BACK of the pack, this wasn't a problem for me.

I'm just guessing, but I'd bet that the rule is to simply hold your line.

I, too, Bob. It's a confusing scenario. What if anything have you read about accidents involving “...a draft created [as the truck passed] and it caused him to lose his balance and he fell over,”?

This is lengthy.Etiquette in a bike race/rules/technique. The smoothest part of the pack is the front third. Almost like riding with a tail wind. Forget you have brakes. You don't use them or if you do you do it sparingly. The further back in the pack the more brakes are used which creates a stop go affect/not good. Be aware of wind direction at all times as this helps you to position yourself properly on the rider ahead of you. Watch ahead so your aware of what's going on. It's like a dance. As the rider ahead of you moves so do you. Depending on the side you are overlapped on watch the riders head & shoulder as these are the first telling signs of lateral movement. Remember, no brakes move with him and those behind do same. If you get bumped do not try and move away or you'll probably go down. Lean back into the bumper. Also, don't be afraid to use your hands. If someone starts to move laterally into you put your hand on their hip or side. No Brakes. Stay close/tight to rider(s) in front of you so as not to allow gaps to form. If/when you know you can no longer Hang On, wave the riders behind you past to prevent a gap forming. Also, as riders are over taking or passing you glance back to see how big the train is and be ready to jump in behind or fill a gap without slowing anyone's momentum. No brakes. Be smooth, hold your line, relax. If your not willing/able to pull stay out of the front. Or, if you do pull keep it steady: if the pack is moving at 22mph that's the speed you pull at. Not 19 and not 23. No brakes. If you do most/all of your riding solo then racing or riding in a large pack will be tough. That person may want to start toward the back and work your way up as riders become more strung out. Once learned, riding and maneuvering in a pack of 25 -several hundreds is thrilling. Or for those elite riders in a small breakaway or TTT it's like the working of a Swiss Watch. Try it, you'll like it.

Yes, I agree nice post.

As a personal look at big group rides, I have no problem feeling at ease
with the Tour de Cure ride start even though I have seen a number of road
scrapes...yet I find myself very nervous at a Wednesday Mendon Ponds ride
start so much so that I usually just want to go home if I show up at all. I
wonder if some of that stems from start time, one is on a day off and the
other is after work...one is a ride down Monroe Avenue at rush hour then
hill climb (for me:^) and the other is a chauffeured drop at the start by
Team Pete?????

Peter,

You should come out tonight to Mendon Ponds and join us for a great ride. Their is plenty of space up front to lead us out, and its very "safe" in the front of the pack. I think the number of people turning out this year is lower than average, so you will be fine. Also keep in mind that a couple of riders (I will keep names anonymous at this time) have been drinking just plain old boring Hersheys chocolate milk. I think it is your responsibility and duty to show up tonight in your yoohoo kit. Additionally post ride open a fresh, beautiful and awesome yoohoo drink and talk about how delicious and wonderful it tastes.  I hear that Big Red is eager for sprint!  With this in mind I have heard (from the back of the pack)  ;) that their is sometimes a sprint finish going on. You can show the Mendon boys how to sprint! Hope to see you tonight!

Thank you Jesse and Paul for the enticing offers of a friendly Wednesday ride. Alas, I am all in for Thursday Show & Go’s, we fought Anne’s  work schedulers for a ride night per week (actually her first in line boss is nice -  she just watched Jacob Tuesday night). The S&G has a history and is more convenient for me so that was the choice; maybe the schedule will need to rethought for next year.

I have no problem with chocolate milk, it just is not packaged correctly..well old Quik (Nesquik) rabbit would probably look nice on a jersey…I wonder if there is one out their? Maybe a giant Hershey Syrup bottle with a glass of milk and bowl of ice cream next to it with the caption “The possibilities are endless!” ( ©™, if not already)  Wait…Bosco, that would be classic, plus it has the Seinfeld crossover reference for TV geeks :^)

A couple of the lead riders, Jessie and Kevin who by the way are riding very well posted a total of 13 PR's including some Cups for being on the over-all Top Ten list dating back several years.
