This is a Real Gran Fondo Ride!! North west Maryland where the savageman tri takes place. The 125 miler is 16,500" of climbing, the 100 miler is 12,700', more than our Highlander. Next Saturday...

I rode part of the Savageman triathlon route last year. It was a truly beautiful, quiet route following the creeks and river, not your typical tri route. There are many steep killer hills and long climbs. If you check the photos you can tell by the rider's body position just how steep the climbs are. Since then I have wanted to go back and ride the whole route. So, I'm thinking I'll give it my best shot - going to be a long day for sure.

KOMs galore for Roger Weston,

The "Diabolical Double" - the feature event of the Garrett County Gran Fondo, the Diabolical Double is a true, extreme epic on par with European climbing classics such as Etape du Tour, la Marmotte, and the classic Italian Gran Fond...os. At 125 miles and 16,500 feet of climbing, the Diabolical Double is an all-day affair that is an extreme challenge for even the most fit rider. Included in Rapha Continental's 2009 tour of the Top 25 Epic Rides in North America, and called by the Rapha riders "one of the most demanding and stunning rides of the summer", the Diabolical Double is destined to become a true North American cycling classic.

•The "Savage Century" - at 102 miles and 12,700 feet of climbing, the Savage Century is a very challenging century ride in its own right despite playing second fiddle to the Diabolical Double. The Savage Century shares the first 59 miles and final 15 miles of the Diabolical Double route.

•The "Masochistic Metric" - at 62 miles and 8000 feet of climbing, the Masochistic Metric can stake its claim as the toughest metric century route in North America. The Masochistic Metric shares the first 47 miles of the Diabolical Double and Savage Century routes and includes some of the most stunning rural scenery and vistas you are ever to encounter on a bike as well as the vast majority of the steepest climbs encountered in the Savage Century and Diabolical Double routes

•The "Fabulous 44" - at 44 miles and 4800 feet of climbing, the "Fabulous 44" is an excellent option for anyone looking for a longer, more challenging ride than the "Garrett's Greatest 25", but is not ready to undertake the extreme challenge of the Masochistic Metric Century.

The base of all KOM climbs are marked with signs and timing mats in the road. Please be on the lookout for the signs and timing mats at the base of each of these climbs and make sure to ride over the mat. Also, in order to ensure the chip is read, timing chips must be attached to your ankle and not on your bike frame, handlebars, or jersey pocket.

I’m registered. This is the toughest ride yet. I’m not going to dwell on it  - just going to do it.

What about the Quadzilla? That is a lot of climbing, even for the short 44 mile course.

It's the most climbing I've ever heard of in a ride. And the 25 extra miles if you do over a century adds 4000', four 1000' climbs in 25 miles. I'm honestly not sure I will make the whole thing, it will be close to dark when I finish, but I'm not waiting a year. Right Now, in under a week. Speaking of QZ, I know several cyclists who said every year "I should've done it, maybe next time." Next time never came. Now it's "I should've done it when I was younger." That's true for me now too,  experience and willpower will have to get me through because there are very very few who can maintain the fitness of their youth.

Make up a special cassette with a lot of big numbers in it 26, 28, 30, 32. If I may ask what will you be using for gearing? Hope you get perfect weather and good luck and I’m pretty sure you can do it, find your rhythm and chug along, I know I can, I know I can….
