We've been extremely quiet over the past few months. Here's a tune for y'all to look at and maybe wake us up for a bit.

First, any comments on the tune will be welcome. I wrote this back in February and as I looked over it last night, I found a few changes I might make.

Second, I would request suggestions for a hymn that you think might be fitting for this tune. I wrote this, typeset it in Melody Assistant, and then set it aside. When I got back to it to enter the words I discovered I had not only lost the paper with the text, but also had forgotten which text I chose. I thought it would be interesting to see which text you might choose.

I lift mine eyes unto the hills, from whence shall come my aid?
My help will come from God the Lord, who heav'n and earth hath made.

Good idea, Will. Here's another possibility (from Watts, "Divine Songs: Attempted in Easy Language, for the Use of Children"):

Almighty God, thy piercing eye
Strikes through the shades of night
And our most secret actions lie
All open to thy sight

(Fuge on "And our most secret actions lie...")

This is something I definitely need to keep constantly in mind!

Here's a printing of the full text:

If you want a second verse, I think verse 5 would work.

Yikes — sorry, I thought this was going to Robert alone. If I had intended to write more generally, I would have given more context. In particular, this is Psalm 121:1. It's (roughly) based on the King James Version. It seems to me that the words are half-remembered versions of a real text, but I can't find it, so I guess I wrote it :)

Will:

Your text sounded familiar to me; perhaps you were half-remembering this version from the Scottish Psalter and Paraphrases:

Will, Wade, thanks for the suggestions. I like both of them. Some day when I'm not looking for it I'll probably find the paper with the hymn I picked on it. But by then I will have long since picked one of these or some other hymn to finish the song. *:) happy

I appreciate your help. Have a blessed day.

The strong, ascending/descending pattern in the melody makes it suitable for Ps. 121, as Will suggested.  You might want to look at the Tate/Brady c.m. setting, (1st verse below, other 4 available with a routine Google search):

To Zion's hill I lift my eyes,
from thence expecting aid.
From Zion's hill and Zion's God,
who heav'n and earth  has made.

Randy, thanks for this suggestion. I am leaning very heavily toward Psalm 121, even though I very much like the text Wade suggested. Maybe I'll save it for another song!
