Hello, I have not been able to get the sacred harp repeats to work in Lilypond, does anyone here happen to know how to make them work?

Thank you

I am not familiar with Lilypond.  The program I use (Myriad) doesn't have a freestanding repeat for use in the middle of a measure.  I get around it by using 1st/2nd endings more frequently than most fasola books do.  I assume that anyone typesetting such a book would use a program that permits the freestanding repeats.  A recent example is attached (.pdf).

Anzick, there is no "official" way to write repeats in shape-note/Sacred Harp music. As long as your typeset songs are readable (ask the experienced singers in your area) and follow the basic format you'll see in the Cooper Book or the 1991 edition, you need not be worried. If you were, for example, to submit something for the revision of the 1991 ed. currently underway and it was accepted, the editors will re-typeset your piece in the style they have chosen. Regarding Lillypond (I never became comfortable with it, I'm afraid) you might want to contact the editors of The Shenandoah Harmony; they used Lillypond to typeset that tune book and I, for one, think they did an outstanding job.

Thank you for your responses. Yes, I agree, The Shenandoah Harmony is typeset very well. Well, I found the answer on the Lilypond user group: http://lilypond.1069038.n5.nabble.com/Sacred-Harp-Repeats-td223680.html

I add the following to a style import file:

% Four-dot repeat
\defineBarLine ";" #'("" ";" "")
% Thick bar, followed by four-dot repeat.
\defineBarLine ".;" #'("." ";" "")
% End repeat, thick bar, begin repeat.
\defineBarLine ";.;" #'(";.;" ";" "")
% End repeat, thick bar
\defineBarLine ";." #'(";." "" "")
% Repeat and final double bar
\defineBarLine ";.." #'(";.." "" "")

Then I just use \bar ".;" as normal, for instance.

Attached is my full style sheet.
