In the 1950s, J. H. Carter of Jamestown, Alabama, traveled to Sacred Harp singings around the region, often bringing along his open reel tape recorder. We're excited to be able to share more than fifty hours of those recordings through the Sacred Harp Museum's YouTube channel in the playlist linked here:

Most of the recordings are from Blount and Dekalb Counties in Alabama, but there are also a few from West Alabama and West Georgia. Carter also recorded a few smaller groups, sometimes singing his own shape note compositions. You might recognize some of the leaders in these recordings, as well - many of them are still with us! You'll find the complete track list for each recording by expanding the description below the video. We've uploaded the audio to YouTube for your streaming convenience, but note that these are audio rather than video recordings.

Thanks to Carter's granddaughter Vera Floyd for donating the tapes, to Buell Cobb for facilitating the project, and to Seth Langer and Keillor Mose for helping label individual tracks. I've relied on Carter's spoken introductions to identify leaders since very few of these singings published minutes. If you recognize names I got wrong, if you know the first names of folks he just calls "Mr." or "Mrs.," or if you have any other details to add, please add a comment!

Hope you'll enjoy this treasure trove of classic Sacred Harp!
