Dear all,

I was looking at Ingalls' Christian Harmony and noticed 40 Hope having a similar contour and the same text as 491 Eagles Wings in the 2025 edition of The Sacred Harp. Was Hocutt inspired by the Ingalls tune?

Sincerely,
A. J. Higgins

AJ,

Hocutt's arrangement appears to be based on the tune known in Primitive Baptist hymnals as Salem's Bright King: https://hymnary.org/tune/abel_51134

To my ear, as well as in the way the text is distributed across strains, EAGLE'S WINGS is a better match to the Guilderoy group, a la SoH BABE OF BETHLEHEM or ShH I LOVE THE HOLY SON OF GOD. I grew up with it under the name SALEM'S BRIGHT KING.

Best,

E. Fulton.
