I know that a lot of people are very curious about what progress the revision committee is making on the new version of the 1991 edition of The Sacred Harp. I was talking with someone on the committee who wants to remain nameless (I will call him Deep Note), and he provided me with links for committee and subcommittee session notes. I don’t feel comfortable sharing the links broadly, but I have read what I think are all the notes, and there were several surprising discussions and decisions made. Here are a few of them:

  1. They are hoping to restore the practice of including oval photos of the revision committee members to the front matter of the book, but also include all of the people involved in subcommittees. This will add approximately 20 pages.
  2. There has been a lot of comma drama, apostrophe catastrophes, in the text prep subcommittee;
  3. It’s likely that many new songs will be added to the front of the book, approximately 14 pages of them. This will mean adding, say, 14 to current songs when calling out numbers; 45t will become (for example) 59t.
  4. As a fund-raiser, a special edition will be created called The Stafford Sacred Harp. It will contain just one unique tune: STAFFORD, but set to the approximately 1,037 different texts submitted to replace the current lyrics. (I’m excited by this, because it means my ISAAC WATTS acrostic: “I seek an angel choir … with all the trembling saints” will see publication).
  5. Miscellaneous facts:
    1. The book cover color will be either Pantone 15-1360 Tn (Shocking Orange) or Pantone 12-0643 TCX Blazing Yellow
    2. The new typeface is Transport
    3. The rudiments will include a lemonade recipe
    4. Approximately 10 songs will include the newly discovered fifth shape (haw) discovered in 2010.

All of these are subject to change of course, and Deep Note might have been pulling my leg.

I shouldn’t read things like this so early in the morning.  I was almost sucked into believing it.

Thanks, Will! I was hoping some progress was being made, and your report confirms all my hopes and then some. Is free use of the lemonade recipe limited to beverages during singings, or may we use it at home?

I was suspicious when the report said that we would have to add 14 (or so) to all the call numbers. I know how that would go over with the singers I know! (Will should have picked a prime number!)

I don't know, Barry, the closest prime number, 13, has at least as much arguing against it as 14 has!
