Could someone with ready access to minute books for 1990-1994 let me know whether Harrods Creek singing reported minutes in those years, and if so, forward me copies? I've just noticed that, when the minutes for 1996 were reported, the singing was described as "The sixth annual Shape Note Singing. . . at Harrods Creek Baptist Church at Brownsboro." No minutes for this singing are in the 1995 book, so it may well be that they only began reporting in '96.

If I'm counting right, based on the years in which I know minutes were submitted, I think we just held the 31st iteration of this singing (now a convention), rather than the 26th as previously thought. Whoops!

Thanks,

E. Fulton.

Hello Erin,

I've just checked scanned copies of the 1990–94 minutes books and can report that the Harrods Creek singing does not appear to have reported minutes for those years. The only instances of "Harrod" are the West Georgia singers Paige and Kayla Harrod. The only singings held in Kentucky are the Kentucky State Convention in Berea and, starting in 1991, a January "Four-Note Singing" held in Marion.

All best,
Jesse

Check with people who were there. I was at all of these singings & yes they had arranging committees & someone must have been taking minutes.

It was officially a Southern Harmony singing, with half the songs on day1also from Denson, day 2 from Cooper.

Yes, I wish I had noticed this date discrepancy before I was at the airport, or I could simply  have asked Pat Meek! But all signs (the year count in the big minutes; an oral history interview with Michele Cull; Ron Pen's summary history of the Appalachian Association of Sacred Harp Singers) seem to point to the singing having begun in 1991. If minutes were taken in 1991-'95, they were not submitted to the big minutes. I've salvaged and spiffied up all the other years (1996-2019, 2024-'25), which Will Partain is processing for the Christian Harmony site.

Harrods Creek began as an all-day two-book singing, using the Denson Sacred Harp and the Southern Harmony. The first two-day convention was held in 1999, with the Cooper Sacred Harp being added at the same time. At first, it was typical for different sessions to be reserved for different tunebooks and Michele recalls that time was often set aside for a lecture introducing Southern Harmony. By the time that Sunday singing was added in 1999, the Denson Sacred Harp was being regarded as the primary tunebook, with the Southern Harmony serving as alternative book on Saturday and the Cooper Sacred Harp on Sunday. From 2002 to 2019, however, Harrods Creek was a fully mixed, three-book “bag” singing. The date also solidified into the familiar "weekend before the first Saturday in May" in 2002; previously, the singing had bapped around a variety of spring dates. It is expected to be held on the weekend of the second Sunday in October next year.

E. Fulton.
