Do any of you know of the existence online of a recording of PETERBOROUGH by Ralph Harrison, which is 504t in The Sacred Harp, 2012 Cooper Revision

I have not located one, so thought I would reach out and see if any of you know.

Thanks!

This is interesting, Robert. The Hymn Tune Index does not show any tunes by Ralph Harrison named PETERBOROUGH, not in his own collections or in any other collection. I tried searching by incipit and found that this tune is number 10186 in the Hymn Tune Index. It cites 43 printings of the tune up to 1820 under the following tune names: AUSTERFIELD, LAVINGTON, PETERBORO, PETERBORO', PETERBOROUGH, and PETERSBOROUGH. Temperley does not assign a composer to this tune and the first printing he indexes dates to 1803 under the tune name LAVINGTON without an attribution. It is listed with the attribution "Harrison/Webb" or "Harrison/Webbe" in collections dating to 1817, 1819 and 1820 and it is listed once with the attribution "Harrison Coll.". It is also attributed to "Webb's Coll." in one collection. Anyway, perhaps you haven't found a recording because it may have been recorded under a different form of the tune name. As to the Harrison attribution, it may be the Karen Willard or someone else involved with the 2012 revision found confirmation that the composer was Ralph Harrison that Temperley did not find.

Sorry, Robert, for not answering your question in my reply, but the attribution to Ralph Harrison in the Cooper Revision is incorrect. Peterborough's earliest appearance (according to the Hymn Tune Index, where it is indexed as tune number 10186) is in Seymour, Lewis and Thaddeus's The Musical Instructor (New York: John C. Totten), 1803. I have looked in Ralph Harrison's Sacred Harmony, and can confirm that it is not present there.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Sorry for introducing some confusion that has long since been cleared up. I was just focused on finding a recording and just went by the citation in the book. Here is what I have in my errata for my book:

Page 216, PETERBOROUGH (504a): Change "Ralph Harrison, 1786" to "The Musical Instructor, Lewis Seymour and Thaddeus Seymour, New York, NY: Printed by John C. Totten, 1803" (Thanks to Chris Brown and Karen Willard)

I think that matches what you all have said. I am glad you all are paying attention!

Thanks.

One more item that may not have been clear. Lewis and Thaddeus Seymour, from Norwalk, Connecticut, were singers, teachers and hardware dealers in Yonkers, New York. PETERBOROUGH or PETERBORO is not mentioned in the index to their Musical Instructor, but the tune appears there, without attribution, as a first printing (according to the late Richard Crawford) as LAVINGTON.

Robert, you might want to add that in "The Musical Instructor" this tune is named LAVINGTON and their is no attribution (according to Temperley).

More thanks. I hope I have not missed anyone!

Jeremiah and Chris, thanks for the music links.

Warren, thanks for the comment on PETERBOROUGH/LAVINGTON. This is something I had in my notes but had failed to include it in my errata.

Wade, thanks for the edit suggestion on the history of PETERSBOROUGH. For now I have gone with Page 216, PETERBOROUGH (504a): Change "Ralph Harrison, 1786" to "Arr. of LAVINGTON, from The Musical Instructor, Lewis Seymour and Thaddeus Seymour, New York, NY: Printed by John C. Totten, 1803". I suppose I could go into more detail in the online "fix", but my goal is for it to be in a format useable if I ever print a second edition of Songs Before Unknown (which seems unlikely). Any suggestions are welcome.

I might add for interested readers, there are three places on my blog to find my “errata” and “addenda” of things that need to be fixed or added to Songs Before Unknown: a Companion to The Sacred Harp, Revised Cooper Edition, 2012.

https://baptistsearch.blogspot.com/2015/11/errata-and-addenda-for-songs-before.html (this was the original one, I think I have not always kept it updated, though I have at times)

If anyone knows of any other additions or corrections, I would be glad to hear from you. Thanks.
