I have continued to hope to find the composer of the words and music of TRUSTING, 486a in the 1911 J. L. White book (was in 1909 & 1910 as well), with little or no success? Could this (below) be the Mary E. Davis who wrote TRUSTING? Thoughts?
One possibility is Mary E. Davis, the daughter of Henry Dixon Davis and Mahala Quintina “Queen” Snyder, who came to Atlanta from Meigs County, Tennessee. In 1900 they were living next to the family of James A. Buchanan, who was a Sacred Harp singer and composer of song 530 in the J. L. White editions of The Sacred Harp. On June 17, 1902 Mary E. Davis married Charles Edward Buchanan, the son of James A. Buchanan. One fact that makes this identification problematic, however, is that in 1909 White listed the composer as “Mary E. Davis,” when by that time she was already “Mary E. Buchanan.” Mary Davis Buchanan was born June of 1882 in Tennessee, and died June 4, 1947 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Sincerely,
Robert Vaughn
