When did the tune IRWINTON by T. W. Carter come back into the Denson Sacred Harp book? It was originally in The Sacred Harp on page 124, and apparently dropped in 1870. Does anyone know when it was added back? Thanks.

Alas, my Index let me down (or I should rather say, I got lazy as I haven't indexed all the Densons):

The Cooper Sacred Harp had the tune from the very beginning and kept it in every single printing on page 244
The James Sacred Harp has it on pg 482 in all printings.
The 1850 Sacred Harp has it on pg 124, not in the Denson 1971, not in the Denson 1987, yes in the Denson 1991.

Thanks, Karen. That is very helpful. I surmised that it must have only gotten back into the book in 1991. But I missed that it was in the James Book. Never thought to look up further after I did not find the title IRWINTON in the index. It is called INVITATION instead (probably a printer's mistake) on page 482!

This might help: https://originalsacredharp.com/2016/12/31/the-ins-and-outs-of-revision/. Hammrick says, "  A strong effort was made to ensure that no song that was a favorite of any living singer would be removed. Also, the pagination was not to be affected for the rest of the book."  Songs were added back due to the insistence of South Georgian singers as well, https://originalsacredharp.com/2014/11/12/elphrey-heritage-northern-contributor-to-the-nineteenth-century-sacred-harp/. This group still continued to use the 1911 book.

Its the same tune as Resignation in Southern Harmony.  But Resignation has 23rd Psalm's words.

Some time before the 1991 ed. became available there was a pamphlet called "A Proposed Selection of Music for the 1991 Revision of The Sacred Harp." I'm not sure about the 'proposed' part as I'm pretty sure this is all of the tunes added in. I know they were all added as I went through and wrote the book page numbers in. I think it was used at a singing to introduce the new tunes. (Grammar checker does not like that last line) I did not attend so I can't be absolutely sure about that. IIRC it was out about a year before the new books became actually available some time before April 1992, as that's when I got my copy.

All of this is a long way to confirm that Irwinton is p.6 of the New Tunes booklet.

John Bealle created a great index of songs coming and going in the Denson book, which has been made available on the Cincinnati Sacred Harp website: Page Tracking Table.
