Hannah,

I have one of these and it is very comfortable.  I know someone who performs professionally in them and she sounds good.  The downside is they look goofy and she kept bumping into the mic because they protrude (think duck beak) until she got used to them.  I can't attest to how protective they are but I imagine they're more protective than wearing nothing.
