I'm in the beginning stages of a search for tunes used to set the John
Leland text that begins:

"That glorious day is drawing nigh"

or, as it sometimes appears,

"The glorious day is drawing near"

At present I'm only interested in settings published prior to 1835.

So far, I've come up with the following:

MILLENNIUM (Ingalls, "Christian Harmony," 1805)
MILLENNIUM (Ephraim Reed, "Musical Monitor," 1817 & later)
[Reed's tune is not the same as Ingall's tune]
ZION'S LIGHT (Funk, "A Collection of Genuine Church Music," 1832)?

I put the question mark because I haven't verified that ZION'S LIGHT is
in the first edition of Funk's collection. Can anyone verify this for
me? And can anyone cite additional pre-1835 settings of this text? And
yes, I have search Temperley's hymntune index.

Thanks in advance, and keep on singing.

Can't really answer about the first edition; but it occurs so early in
the second (p. 28), I'd think it was already there. The second is only
modestly enlarged, and if Funk followed the usual custom, he just added
new tunes at the end. However, this revision was somewhat more
radical, in that he decided not to use rests or "vain repetitions."

Thanks, Tom. I believe I've found most of the post-1835 tunes,
including those in the Dowling collection, but I'd forgotten that
Walker dates his arrangement of THAT GLORIOUS DAY (Christian Harmony,
p. 114) to 1830, with a note indicating that "The melody [is] as I
learned it from my dear mother when I was only five years old."

It is not in the first edition, but first appears in the 2nd. as Dick Hulan said on pg. 28.  When Funk revised the Collection of Genuine Church Music, he did revise it, basically, in taking out earlier non-conformist English tunes associated particularly with Methodists.  While the book is somewhat larger, Funk would edit sections of 4 to 14 pages.  In this case, ed. 1 has the tunes "Advocate", the English tune "Slateford" beginning at the bottom of p 28 and continued on the next page, with "London" on the bottom of p 29.  In the 2nd ed., "Slateford" was removed and "Zion's Light" was inserted.  However, "Zion's Light" is another harmonization of the tune "Pleasant Hill," most often harmonized by Nicholson from Davisson's Supplement to the Kentucky Harmony.  However, Wade's text was not associated with "Pleasant Hill."  So to make a long matter short, "Zion's Light" as a tune extends back to the 1820s but I haven't found the wedding of Wade's text with this tune until the 2nd ed. of Funk's compilation, which was published in 1835.
