Just a note for others who are working on getting Jamulus set up: if you have a computer without an ethernet port (that's most laptops these days), there exist USB-to-ethernet adapters (aka "dongles") that will allow you to plug an ethernet cable from your router into the USB port on your laptop. Here's the one I have. Many new routers also have USB ports, so you might be able to use a USB-to-USB cable.

But looking at this document about choral singing with Jamulus that Lena just posted in the BASH facebook group, if you don't have the necessary hardware yet, it seems like it's still worth a shot over wifi. Looking forward to testing this with y'all at 2pm!

For those who were able to attend the zoom singing last night, we discussed adding Jamulus to the monthly singings as a way to allow a more interactive and "real" singing experience for those who want to try it. For those that don't know: Jamulus is software that attempts to facilitate a low-latency audio for realtime group music-making. Video conferencing software (eg Zoom) involves too much latency (ie delay) to have a "real" singing, but Sacred Harp groups around the world have been using Jamulus with some success.

To give people a chance to test out their set-ups, we are going to start up our server today (7/21) at 2pm pacific for a low-key test session. The server's address is jamulus.bayareasacredharp.org, you'll need to enter this in the "Server Name/Address" field of the "Connection Setup" window, see screenshot attached (thanks to Aisha for that! ). Mark Godfrey will leave it running and be there to help for at least an hour, but we know this is short notice for some folks so we will also plan and announce some future times if today doesn't work.

You can download the software here: http://llcon.sourceforge.net/ Installation is pretty straight-forward for Macs; for Windows, you need to install a separate audio driver (called ASIO) which may be a little involved. Here's the "Getting Started" guide for help: https://github.com/corrados/jamulus/wiki/Getting-Started

Basic technical requirements are a decent internet connection (their website says 200 kbps) via an Ethernet cable (not WiFi), headphones/earbuds and a microphone (built-in mics on laptops should work). Note the server is in the Bay Area in order to minimize latency for Bay Area singers, but people have had success connecting to Jamulus sessions from hundreds of miles away so it really all depends on your internet connection and hardware.

None of us are experts at this point and won’t be able to provide additional IT support if you’re having trouble but don’t worry – you should still be able to participate in the zoom part of the monthly singings even without this software.
