It is the first film by Hats Off Productions and stars Anang Desai, Supriya Pathak, Rajeev Mehta, Nimisha Vakharia and Jamnadas Majethia in the lead roles. The film was a moderate commercial success.[1]
The god of knowledge, Ishwar Buddhidev, visits the Parekh family, consisting of the elder Babuji, his eldest son Praful, Praful's wife Hansa, Hansa's brother Himanshu, Praful's little brother's widow Jayshree, Hansa and Praful's daughter Chakki, and Jayshree's son Jacky. The Parekhs drive the god crazy and he runs back to heaven.
The Parekhs are informed that Hansa and Himanshu's father is on his deathbed. Before dying he states that his last wish is to fulfill Himanshu's dream. Himanshu reveals that his dream is to have a legendary marriage. But after getting rejected by hundreds of brides, he falls in love with their neighbour's daughter Parminder Kaur. The two get engaged. On the day of the wedding, Himanshu realises that his marriage is not legendary, as it lacks thrill and adventure. The Parekhs stall the wedding and try to turn the Parminders against Himanshu so the two get broken up and then have a legendary reunion.
The Parekhs decide to rob Parminder's close friend Chakku Singh's house, but they discover that Chakku has been murdered and the police arrest Himanshu as the suspect. Parminder's brother breaks the marriage but it is revealed that Parminder is marrying another groom tomorrow. During the court hearing, it is revealed that Chakku is alive and confesses that he committed suicide and Himanshu is released.
The film released on 1 October 2010 and became the first Indian television series to be adapted into a film..[2] The film faced stiff competition from big-budget movies like Priyanka Chopra - Ranbir Kapoor starrer Anjaana Anjaani and dubbed Hindi version of Aishwarya Rai - Rajinikanth starrer Enthiran (Robot) and in the end its performance at the box office was termed hit.[4]
Why did this ultra-loud, blindingly colour-coordinated bunch who did nothing of any consequence in the first movie, bother to circle back for a sequel? In 2010, there may still have been space for a movie spin-off of a popular TV show, especially when it went off for seasonal breaks. But to do this now, when endless re-runs have made sure that Hansa Ben (Supriya Pathak) and her cohorts are never too far off from their fans? It makes no sense.
A week after Diwali 2023, Khichdi 2, the follow-up to Khichdi: The Movie (2010), debuted on big screens. After almost two months of its theatrical run, the family-friendly comedy film is finally prepared for its OTT premiere.
The film's main cast consists of Rajeev Mehta, Anang Desai, Jamnadas Majethia, Vandana Pathak, and Supriya Pathak Kapur. It is the fifth and most recent installment in the Khichdi franchise, coming after 2010's Khichdi: The Movie.

I can quote this movie word for word. Not everyone's cup of tea tho. There are some scenes like Golden Fort, hospital bell, and Jaipur signal, that bring tears to my eyes. Also, I want whatever Hansa and Praful have.
The sequel brings back memories of the popular TV show, but the antics are less amusing this time. There is some crisp humour here and there, but on the whole, the movie fails to deliver anything beyond its predictable format of senselessness.
I am sure this kind of a film has an audience, but they were sadly missing today from the hall. So, if the makers thought that the audiences were eagerly waiting to welcome the Parekh family back to the theaters, then I guess there was some miscalculation. Being one of those who hates to run down a film, I tried finding some positives about it. The only being, the performance and expressions of Supriya Pathak throughout the movie and to some extent the look of the film and the colourful cinematography.
Filmmaker Aatash Kpadia in his mission to craft another tale of craziness, ends up trying to tickle us to laugh. The story of Khichdi 2: Mission Paanthukistan goes this way, Rajeev Mehta transforms into an emperor with a beard, moustache and royal clothes. The family is out on a mission to save Paanthukistan from the clutches of a cruel emperor and in this process they are up to their regular comic behaviours which are mostly forced. But I am happy that in such grim times, at least some filmmakers felt the need to make a comedy, but I never thought that the film would turn out to be so mindless.
As I mentioned earlier, the look of Khichdi 2: Mission Paanthukistan was brilliant with landscapes to die for from serene beaches, to a flight in the cloud, hustle-bustle of cities to snow-clad mountains to the harsh scorching deserts. But some how the visuals too were not stitched well.
I am not looking for an iota of reality in this film, but the whole idea of, Parekh family coming to the save the people of Paanthukistan is a bit too hard to digest. The makers should have understood that Khichdi is making a comeback to the big screen after 13 long years, so the audiences are not the same. The taste of the viewers have changed and they have evolved from what you have seen them back then.

Khichdi and Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai are two comedy television series that left an indelible mark on the audience. These shows remain evergreen, offering laughter whenever a dull day looms. Khichdi extended its charm to the big screen with a movie in 2010, reuniting beloved characters from the series. Now, in 2023, a sequel is on the horizon with Khichdi 2: Mission Paanthukistan. Director Aatish Kapadia, who also helmed Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, discloses the potential for a movie crossover between these adored series.
In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, the Khichdi 2: Mission Paanthukistan team shared a wealth of delightful details about the film, along with amusing anecdotes and more. When asked about the potential for a movie crossover between Khichdi and Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, director Aatish Kapadia, who directed both series, acknowledged that the idea had indeed crossed his mind.
Actor Jamnadas Majethia, who produced both shows, weighed in on the idea, stating, "While the notion of a crossover is intriguing, it would be an immense challenge, not only in terms of writing but also in elevating it to a level where we can do justice to these iconic characters and actors. So, it's appearing to be quite difficult."
Directed by Aatish Kapadia, Khichdi 2 features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Anang Desai, Supriya Pathak, Rajeev Mehta, Nimisha Vakharia, Jamnadas Majethia, Kriti Kulhari, and Pratik Gandhi. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 17, 2023.
