hello sg! in light of passion week, there is a lot going on.

reminder: all services this week are formal. that pretty much just means no jeans. try to dress up and in darker, more somber colors for the thursday and friday services to physically show that we are remembering Jesus' death. for sunday, lighter colors are fine. it's easter! he is risen! be happy! :D

thursday, 3/28
Maundy Thursday Service
7pm @ Hoilday Inn Ballroom
meet in tre lounge by 6:40pm

friday, 3/29
Good Friday Service
7pm @ Judah Christian School
meet in tre lounge by 6:40pm

sunday, 3/31
Easter Sunrise Service
5am @ TCBC
meet in tre lounge by 4:40am
Easter Baptism Service
12:30pm @ Foellinger Auditorium
meet in tre lounge by 12:10pm

we encourage you to go to as many of them as you can so we can better reflect and remember the work Jesus did 2,000 years ago collectively as a church.

also, we will be fasting as a sg from 10pm on Thursday night to 10pm on Friday night! we'll break together as a sg after Good Friday Service. :)

A small blurb about the fast we will be doing together: This is an email I sent out to the set up ministry I am a part of. Since we are fasting too, I just wanted to forward it to you guys as well. If you get around to reading it, hopefully it will be helpful as we fast together this passion week.

---

I know it's pretty hard, especially with school, but please consider it. Among many aspects of fasting, there are 3 things about it that especially stick out to me as I've been learning about the discipline of fasting.

1) Fasting is more than just not doing something. More than proving to yourself that you can do something you don't want to do, we fast with purpose. This week, our purpose would be to pray & reflect on Passion week. More than just building tolerance for misery + pain (and sometimes making sure people know we are miserable while fasting), learn to find contentment in Christ. I think it's about finding a greater and deeper joy in Christ. Our hearts will go after what brings most pleasure.

2) It's a commitment of surrender and faith to God. We deny our body's most basic need, depend on God, and have faith that he will give us exactly what we need. More than our physical need for food, our spirits need Christ - and fasting is a physical demonstration of that. While fasting, pray and read the word.

3) Fasting (whether from food or w/e) is a normal Christian discipline. It's not only for "super" Christians, but it's a valuable weapon that we all can and should use to repent, fight sin, rededicate ourselves to God, and grow closer to him (among many other purposes).

This is all I can think of at the moment, so if anyone else wants to add something, please do!

Thanks for the email Nelson!

You guys!! I remember reading this article for Helpers last semester which really helped me to understand the purpose of fasting. I always struggled with fasting because I saw it as an obligation, rather than a personal expression. But then I began to understand that fasting with the right heart and a fighting heart can really teach us to become disciplined Christians with hearts of humility, dependence, and hope. One thing that I want to remember is that fasting isn't a one time act that I want to endure, but rather a lifestyle (it doesn't always have to be food!) that expresses my dedication and commitment to surrender and live my life out for the Lord!

So if you guys haven't read this before, read it!! Or if you already did, read it again! :) It's really not a long read and I can say that it can really help us to remember to fast, sacrifice and reflect on what Christ has done for us, especially this Passion week.
