Hi everyone,

We are looking for tech companies of below 100 people, based in the Bay Area, who would be interested in having a software engineering graduate from one of the UK's top engineering universities (eg. Cambridge - just like Stanford, but without the money; and Imperial, just like MIT, but without the money) work for them for 1 year after graduation as part of the new Silicon Valley Internship Programme (UK spelling - sorry).

Sponsoring companies would be responsible for paying the graduate for the duration of the 1 year programme the average starting salary of a UK graduate engineer, which, I am embarrassed to say, is only around $50k.

What's the idea:

Basically, a group of UK entrepreneurs have been working with various parts of the UK government to help them figure out simple things that can be done to promote technical entrepreneurship back in Britain. Entrepreneurship is very much a people thing, in my opinion, and the attitudes and views of the human capital stock of would-be British entrepreneurs is critical to a flourishing tech sector in the UK. The view of the entrepreneurs involved in the discussion was that one of the biggest impacts of working in Silicon Valley is the change in view as to what is possible and what an individual can achieve.

Following on from these discussions, I proposed that entrepreneurs with companies that could take on new engineering grads could do so to give them a taste of Silicon Valley which they could then take home to the UK. The initial ambition is quite modest 6-10 grads placed with companies in the Bay Area for the class graduating in 2013. In discussion with the British Consul general, Priya Guha, it seems that the UK government can help us with the tricky issue of getting visas for the grads and the Royal Academy of Engineers is on board along with the Sainsbury Management Fellows to help to source and interview the grads back in the UK.

How does it work?:

The programme will advertise at selected engineering schools in the UK in the and accept applications through until Xmas. From there, we will whittle down the applicants to a shortlist by the end of March. The sponsoring companies will then interview the final set of candidates and we will attempt to match up the preferences of the Sponsors with the preferences of the grads.

The grads will then start work in September 2013 for 1 year working as an member of the Sponsor's engineering team and they will also partake in a few half day sessions throughout the year to further broaden their experience. Additionally, each grad will have a mentor from a separate company.

At the end of the programme, the Grad's visas will be up and they will need to return to the UK.

Who's involved?:

<![if !supportLists]>?    <![endif]>UK Consulate in San Francisco - they are taking responsibility to get the visas for the Grads

<![if !supportLists]>?    <![endif]>The Royal Academy of Engineering & Sainsbury Management Fellowship who are helping to find and interview top grads

<![if !supportLists]>?    <![endif]>British American Business Council - who are just being generally helpful

<![if !supportLists]>?    <![endif]>LoopUp - my company - the first company to sign up for some grads!

What does a sponsoring company need to do?:

<![if !supportLists]>?    <![endif]>Help to establish the hiring criteria against which we will screen the Grads

<![if !supportLists]>?    <![endif]>Interview the final round of Grads (you may also be involved in the screening process, if you fancy)

<![if !supportLists]>?    <![endif]>Pay the grads for 1 year at a modest salary - this is to be finalized, but around $50k

<![if !supportLists]>?    <![endif]>Get the guys involved in the engineering process and give them some meaningful work to do!

How do you express interest?

We are really just getting this off the ground at the moment so please just email me with the name and size of your company along with how many grads you might be interested in taking. Once we've got a group of interested companies together, we'll get on a call to solicit input on the programme and plan for the coming months.

Thank you very much for your time and support.

With warm regards,

Mike

PS: this is just Bay Area at this time...
