Son preference in China is a gender preference issue. Preference of sons can be explained by an attitude: a belief that boys have more value than girls; it can be defined as a gender bias as well.[1] This phenomenon in China can be shown in gender sex ratio.[2] The financial support that parents receive after their child's marriage is significantly affected by their child's gender.[3]

The Committee recommends that China conduct compulsory gender equality education for family planning officials and recommend that China address the tendency to be patriarchal in rural areas and address the root causes of patriarchal attitudes in rural areas. To solve the negative consequences of the one-child policy, the specific recommendations of this committee is to expand the benefit of public in rural areas, especially rural women, by expanding the insurance system and pensions in China. In addition, with efforts of various government departments in China, nowadays, more people can treat boys and girls equally.[38]

The sex ratio at birth (SRB) is defined as the number of boys born to every 100 girls, and is remarkably consistent in human populations at around 105 male births to every 100 female births. South Korea was the first country to report a very high SRB, because the widespread uptake of sex-selective technology in South Korea preceded that of other Asian countries.4 The SRB started to rise in South Korea in the mid-1980s, and by 1992 the SRB was reported to be as high as 125 in some cities.

In India there are also marked regional differences in SRB. Incompleteness of birth registration makes the SRB difficult to calculate accurately, but using the closely related ratio of boys to girls under the age of six years, it is found that there are distinct regional differences across the country. Several states in the north and west such as Punjab, Delhi and Gujarat have sex ratios as high as 125, but in the south and east, several states such as Kerala and Andhra Pradesh have sex ratios of around 105.3

Starr studied the influence of mothers because there's more evidence that daughters model themselves after their mothers, but she believes that fathers may also play an important role in how young girls see themselves. She would also like to look at how fathers and the media influence boys' understanding of sexualized messages and views toward women. More research is also needed, she said, on the consequences of sexualization on young girls' health, well-being and identity, and whether young girls who objectify themselves also act out these sexual behaviors.

During mini-puberty, there is augmented linear growth and less fat accumulation in boys compared to girls as well as increased penile growth in the boys (27). Testosterone treatment within the first 4 months of life of boys with Klinefelter syndrome increased body mass, especially the fat-free component as well as increased body length and stretched penile length (28). For those with gonadotropin deficiency, it may be prudent to treat with gonadotropins rather than testosterone to induce mini-puberty, for that should stimulate the Leydig cell (endogenous testosterone) and Sertoli cell (eventual spermatogenesis) functions (29).

There is greater gain in fat mass and lesser gain in fat-free mass in the girls during the first 6 months of life (27) with a greater increase in length in the boys during this time frame, likely due to the effects of testosterone. There appears to be no difference in the length velocity of boys and girls beyond 6 months (30).
