I've been offered a Fulbright Specialist Grant to return to Cambodia, where I'll be teaching a short-term class on youth culture and global media and speaking at a conference on these issues. (You know what this means: the return of Camblogdia.blogspot.com!) And, over the next two years, I'll be releasing series of books with Cantankerous Titles, an imprint of Microcosm Press, a long-standing independent publisher in the Pacific Northwest. This essay series, to be released as a box-set, will focus on Cambodian youth culture and media during an age of rampant globalization and development.
• I've reprinted the Manifesti of Radical Literature, with a delightful introduction by Quimby's manager Liz Mason and a Postface by Mikki Halpin. You can buy it here if you would like to.• The Jacksonville Public Library wrote an adorable review of Cambodian Grrrl.
• I'll be taking a break from the project starting December one for the Fulbright, but that'll give everyone plenty of time to catch up on the backlog of posts. (I especially recommend interviews with Gabriela Fitz, Kathi Marquesa, and the ongoing Jose Gerrero.• If you somehow missed the story of the middle-aged single Latina moms who occupied a fieldhouse to demand a library for their kids, you can catch it in their own words at Revision Street, Voices from the Whittier Field House. You can also catch my recent GritTV appearance, which recaps the Whittier Elementary School parents' struggle in less than three minutes, using the very fabulous Ken Burns effect.• You can also "like" Revision Street on Facebook. If liking it in real life has grown stagnant.• You won't want to miss the final interview in the run, with Vanessa Roanhorse. It will be brilliant, sad, and lovely. I promise.
• My recent Truthout piece tracks some interesting developments in the Camodian Garment Sector that people who wear clothes may wish to bear in mind.• One of my favorite essays from last year, Re-inventing the National Border Patrol Museum (and Gift Shop), from Annalemma #5, made the honorable mention list (twice!) in the 2010 Best American Non-Required Reading.
