Where is the downloaded file located?
I tried searching in the defaults.ini using keywords like location, directory etc but couldn't find anything.

Generally, your current directory when you run fanficfare, but you can
set it to a specific directory, relative or absolute. From defaults.ini:

> ## python string Template, string with ${title}, ${author} etc, same as titlepage_entries
> ## Can include directories.
> #output_filename: books/${title}-${siteabbrev}_${storyId}${formatext}
> #output_filename: books/${formatname}/${siteabbrev}/${authorId}/${title}-${siteabbrev}_${storyId}${formatext}
> output_filename: ${title}-${siteabbrev}_${storyId}${formatext}

The command line version can be found at https://pypi.org/project/FanFicFare/#files

You need a python interpreter to use it - if you're on Linux, python comes installed on most distros, and I am pretty sure there's an easy to install python for Windows, but I know almost nothing about it.

jamie,

Your message said "Sent from Mail for Windows 10", so I will assume you
use Windows.

There are two versions of FanFicFare. Both require other software to run.

One version is a GUI plugin for the Calibre e-book management software.
Generally, I recommend the plugin for most users.

Calibre download URL:
https://calibre-ebook.com/download

After installing Calibre, you can go Preferences, Plugins, Get Plugins,
then select and install FanFicFare.

The command line version of FanFicFare requires the Python language
runtime and is installed and run from a command prompt. The command
line version is for users who are already very comfortable with command
prompt and plan to manage their e-book collection manually.

Python download URL:
https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-390/

After installing Python, you can install FanFicFare by running:
pip install fanficfare

After installing Calibre, you can go into Calibre's Preferences, Plugins
(a button towards the bottom), Get Plugins (again, a button towards the
bottom), then select and install FanFicFare from the list of plugins.

The first time you install FanFicFare, Calibre will offer you a choice
of where the plugin should appear in the interface. The default will be
the main toolbar.

Then you will need to restart Calibre (it will offer to restart), and
FanFicFare should appear on the toolbar. Assuming you accepted the default.

That doesn't sound like the usual default options.

By default, Calibre is initially configured with the main toolbar
showing. The main toolbar by default has 14 buttons on it; in the
portable version, at least.

Preferences is the right most one and might be not be showing, depending
on window size. You can also get to Preferences with the control-p hotkey.

Once you have Preferences open, Plugins is a button towards the bottom
left, then a new dialog opens and Get Plugins is again a button towards
the bottom left, then select and install FanFicFare from the list of
plugins. There is a filter box to the right top of that dialog that
makes it easier.

The first time you install FanFicFare, Calibre will offer you a choice
of where the plugin should appear in the interface. The default will be
the main toolbar. You might find it easier to put it on the menubar
instead.

Calibre will need to be restarted before you can use FanFicFare then.

Thanks, I found the files.
Can I also use this chance to ask: if I want to set up a personal.ini, how do I go about doing it? Do I create a new ini and copy paste from defaults? What do I need to input in the command line to make that as the 'default' settings?
I'm using the CLI version.

Hi,
As a screenreader user myself I would strongly suggest giving the command line version a try if you can.
Calibre's accessibility even with the NVDA addon isn't great, you'll have a far easier time of it if you are able to use the commandline.
I'm unable to check at the moment but if I recall there are setup instructions for the cli version on the wiki.
If there are any particular questions let me know, I'm also happy to take this offlist to cut down on traffic.
If anyone is using calibre and the plugin effectively with a screenreader though feel free to chime in.
Hth a bit,

Daniel

And the use is really not that complicated:

$ fanficfare URL-of-the-story

gives you EPub of the story in the current directory.

There are options which can be set (or written to
~/.fanficfare/personal.ini), but 90% of time, this is enough.

Best,

Create personal.ini as a new file and copy/add only the settings you
want to change. Run fanficfare -h will tell you where it reads INI files.

There's also a wiki page about it:
https://github.com/JimmXinu/FanFicFare/wiki/INI-File

hph

I created the personal.ini and pasted only the following (copied and edited from defaults.ini):

## Some sites also require the user to confirm they are adult for
## adult content.  Defaults to false.
is_adult:true

## python string Template, string with ${title}, ${author} etc, same as titlepage_entries
## Can include directories.
#output_filename: books/${title}-${siteabbrev}_${storyId}${formatext}
#output_filename: books/${formatname}/${siteabbrev}/${authorId}/${title}-${siteabbrev}_${storyId}${formatext}
output_filename: ${author}-${title}_${siteabbrev}

The personal.ini is placed in the same directory as defaults.ini, under .../site-packages/fanficfare/, but the personal settings didn't seem to work. Did I do something wrong?

Ok  I will explane what I do in the hope someone can tell me where I am going rong. I open the app and hit f10 check the checkbox to expand the menu and go down to fanficfare I normally have to press enter on this then left click. It loads up I select the format I want it in and go to the edit box to paste the link or links in. When I enter the edit box I can’t leave it for some reason. If I don’t go to the edit box I click as in press enter on ok which seams to do do nothing that I can tell. Tried this a few times and not sure what I am doing rong.

I didn't realize that tab doesn't leave the edit box you put story URLs

In the meantime, do you have any other way to find the 'OK' button at

The current released version doesn't have anyway to leave the story URL
edit box other than to click on something else with the mouse.

If your screen reader can follow mouse and find the OK and Cancel
buttons in the lower right of the dialog box, that's what you want.

If that doesn't work, I've posted a new test version that you can tab
out of, but you have to install it in Calibre first.

You can download it from this URL:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=183305&d=1606422286

After saving that zip file somewhere on your computer, you install it in
Calibre by going into Calibre's Preferences, then the Plugin button,
then the 'Load plugin from file' button near the lower right of the
Plugins dialog. Select the zip file you downloaded, go through the
prompts and restart Calibre.

Hi,

Does anyone know if Calibre is screen reader accessible? I haven't tried
it in years, but it certainly used to be totally inaccessible to screen

After saving that zip file somewhere on your computer, do not unzip it.

You install it in Calibre by going into Calibre's Preferences, then
press the Plugin button, same so far as when installing FanFicFare
originally.

Then press the 'Load plugin from file' button near the lower right of
the Plugins dialog. Select the zip file you downloaded, go through the

Sry, this is taking longer than I imagined.
I did wonder about the $XDG_CONFIG_HOME , I thought it means the home directory and I tried placing personal.ini in  C:\Users\USERNAME\ but it wasn't even able to download anymore. What does $XDG_CONFIG_HOME refer to?

Jim Miller

unread,

Just drop it in the dir you run fanficfare from is easiest.

~ is a standard indicator for 'home director', which is
C:\Users\USERNAME\ in windows.

$XDG_CONFIG_HOME is a unix thing somebody bugged me until I added it. I
think of it as a 'new unix thing', but I'm old and don't use a unix
variant as my daily driver anymore

If you still can't get it to work, use -c and give the full file path to
where ever you want it to be.

Ok this is still not working for some reason.

What I do is,

Open the app then press f10 press space on the checkbox to bring up  or expand the full menu.

Arrow to fanficfare then press enter then I have to press left mouse and control enter just to open it. I press enter on download from url in the edit box I paste the link for example, https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13179863/1/A-Fearful-Redux

I tap  and select the format well just check it is the right one as  well then I tab to ok and press enter and it puts me back in the main window but nothing happens.
