Is putting chapter-distinguishing information like a hash of the title, publication date, and update date into a query string in the chapter URL acceptable?

I'm not thrilled with the idea, but I don't immediately see anything
that would prevent it from working.
The worst I see is: users with a custom chapter_start setting that
displays a chapter URL would have that 'enhanced' chapter URL to click on.

Actually, I'd suggest trying using an #anchor target instead of ?parameter.
