fancytree dropdown

Ok, I somewhat cringe at the thought of this, but honestly ux wise, I cant think of a better way to do this.

Each record in this app has reference to a node in a tree. Ultimately leading me to believe I need a way to basically have something that looks like a combo box and lets me select one item and one item only.

Is there currently anyway  to do this, or does anyone have any pointers about how I could achieve this?
