New to Family Gem

Hello

 

I have just installed Family Gem and imported a GEDCOM file from my PC.  It was very quick and easy to do, and I am impressed with the app.  Can you please explain what, on the Diagram, the small boxes with numbers in above some individuals, one in a blue surround and the other in a pink surround, signify?

One small box is a person
Above is parent, below is child
Blue is male, pink is female
The number inside is the quantity of direct ancestors/descendants of that branch
