when I try to upload a slightly larger Gedcom file, 13.12 MB, it says "Not enough memory for this tree." I think it's an application issue, since my smartphone has plenty of available memory. What can I do?
The message "Not enough memory for this tree." means that
Family Gem is out of RAM memory (software, not
hardware) because the tree is too large to be loaded.
Actually a 13 MB GEDCOM is a very large tree to be loaded for a
not so well designed app like Family Gem.
Unfortunately there is not much you can do:

it seems the program can only upload Gedcom files smaller than 13 MB. Is there a way to increase this limit, possibly even with a paid version?
No, unfortunately there is no easy solution to this RAM memory
problem.
There is no "13 MB limit" imposed by me.
Family Gem tries to open any GEDCOM file, of any size, and it is
designed to load the whole tree in the RAM memory of the device.
If the tree is too large for the available RAM memory, the app
incurs in a fatal Out of Memory error.
