What we know of parenting and raising kids we learned from our
parents. What they knew, they learned from their parents, and so
forth up the line. Most of these knowledge probably go back to the
time when our ancestors used torches to read stone tablets (just
exaggerating).
Since most of what have been passed down through the generations are
terribly inapplicable in this day and age, we make do with trial and
error. A little of the parenting style we used work sometimes, but a
lot more didn't. Then, we begin to wonder where we went wrong. It's
obvious isn't it? They say experience is a good teacher. What happens
if you were raising your first child? What experience are you going to
use?
Your parents will probably tell you to do this, do that. But, they are
telling you something that they did about 25 years ago, and they are
not even sure if it really worked then. Your situation is unique to
you. So, you sort of muddle through and hope for the best. Somehow,
you survived and you pray that your efforts at parenting would produce
a person that would do society some good.
Then, another child comes along. You thought you'd use the same style
and maybe it would work. Chances are it won't. Hey, this is another
unique individual we're talking about here. Each child is different.
You need to study each one and again experiment with what's going to
work. If you have five kids think of the time, and the energy you're
going to spend studying each one of them. And, if you have
thirteen........
My experience (which may or may not work for you) was that if I felt
really good about what I was doing (no guilt, no remorse) then it must
be good for my kid. I considered myself more of a friend. I was
always on the level. I respected them as persons, and considered them
my equal.

Good to hear from. Did you read my e-mail? We were in Bais sometime
in
2002, I think. The dolphins really put on a show for us. The kids
loved it.
Then the boat dropped anchor in the shallows. Deepest part of the
water was
only waist high. Nice sand too. We did some snorkeling. Wow! Corals,
starfishes and all those strange-looking colorful fish. It was nice to
lie down
on the sand with water lapping all over you body. Nothing on your
mind.
Just the sensation of being there and taking it all in. Ahhhhh,
leisure.
Take care. Hear from you soon.
