I'm getting the impression that most dentists and orthodontists are not that experienced with this condition despite their statements otherwise.

Are there any suggestions on how to find the best specialist for this. Our 12 year old is missing lots, not sure we can count right now, somewhere between 9-12 depending if you count wisdom teeth.

Should we be looking for an orthodontist or prosthodontist?

Is there anyone nationally recognized as a specialist in this field or who is doing leading research? I keep hoping it would make a difference that he's still growing to be able to somehow help.

Thanks

Hi there David,

My daughter is 14 and missing 10 permanent teeth, not counting wisdom, so 14 missing including the wisdom. We are in Massachusetts. We have worked with a prosthodontist almost from the beginning who has coordinated and directed the treatment plan with the orthodontist and dentist. She did a single round of braces when she was 10/11 to correct a cross-bite and bring together her front teeth for a better smile.

After that we met with the prosthodontist annually just to keep track of new teeth coming in and spacing and left that we would talk about treatment if and when my daughter felt like she was uncomfortable aesthetically we could talk about short term cosmetic solutions.

Just this month, she received some cosmetic treatment to fill in her front smile more, then had 4 baby teeth extracted to make space for a retainer with fake teeth to hold her over until she's old enough for implants. The prosthodontist has overseen all of this and has written treatment letters to the orthodontist over the years.

I will say that the prosthodontist is NOT covered by insurance and so we are paying out of pocket for consultations and this round of treatment, which is hard for us but also important for her.

Let me know if you have other questions and I hope this information is helpful to you! Good luck!

~Liza
