WOW!  I learned today that my 9 year old is missing 9 permanent teeth.  I am getting an appt with an ortho but our dentist has referred us for genetic testing.  Has anyone else gone through testing and what were the results.

Hi, I'm sorry your child has this issue, but glad you found what little interaction there seems to be about it. We learned when my dd was 8.5 that she was missing 7 teeth. Since then (she just turned 11), as we've followed with xrays at the orthodontist, one of those has begun to appear...BUT it and two others that are there are not developing properly or developing roots ("not viable"), so she may ultimately be dealing with 9 missing.

We were initially told "this is a genetic issue" and when I told them no one in our families is missing teeth (other than my dh only had one wisdom tooth), they said "Yeah, ask around at a family reunion." Soo....we sent email to all family with requests to spread it to cousins of cousins, etc. and we found nothing. We were especially concerned b/c our older child was born with a critical heart defect, so we were thinking it could be connected somehow. Anyway, there are no signs of any of the syndromes or anything where missing teeth are usually linked, and no history of family missing teeth *at all*, so we have not pursued genetic testing. We are concerned that maybe our genetics just didn't match up well somehow and maybe it would be hereditary from here, so we will advise our dd to pursue testing before having children if it concerns her or her husband.

HTH!
