Currently, a number is assigned only after the orbit has been secured by four well-observed oppositions.[2] For unusual objects, such as near-Earth asteroids, numbering might already occur after three, maybe even only two, oppositions.[2] Among more than half a million minor planets that received a number,[3] only about 20 thousand (or 4%) have received a name. In addition, approximately 700,000 minor planets have not been numbered, as of November 2023.[3]

The convention for satellites of minor planets, such as the formal designation (87) Sylvia I Romulus for the asteroid moon Romulus, is an extension of the Roman numeral convention that had been used, on and off, for the moons of the planets since Galileo's time. Comets are also managed by the MPC, but use a different cataloguing system.

A formal designation consists of two parts: a catalog number, historically assigned in approximate order of discovery, and either a name, typically assigned by the discoverer, or, the minor planet's provisional designation.[1]

For example, the unnamed minor planet (388188) 2006 DP14 has its number always written in parentheses, while for named minor planets such as (274301) Wikipedia, the parentheses may be dropped as in 274301 Wikipedia. Parentheses are now often omitted in prominent databases such as the JPL Small-Body Database.

Since minor-planet designations change over time, different versions may be used in astronomy journals. When the main-belt asteroid 274301 Wikipedia was discovered in August 2008, it was provisionally designated 2008 QH24, before it received a number and was then written as (274301) 2008 QH24. On 27 January 2013, it was named Wikipedia after being published in the Minor Planet Circulars.[4][5]

According to the preference of the astronomer and publishing date of the journal, 274301 Wikipedia may be referred to as 2008 QH24, or simply as (274301). In practice, for any reasonably well-known object the number is mostly a catalogue entry, and the name or provisional designation is generally used in place of the formal designation. So Pluto is rarely written as 134340 Pluto, and 2002 TX300 is more commonly used than the longer version (55636) 2002 TX300.

The major exception to the convention that the number tracks the order of discovery or determination of orbit is the case of Pluto. Since Pluto was initially classified as a planet, it was not given a number until a 2006 redefinition of "planet" that excluded it. At that point, Pluto was given the formal designation (134340) Pluto.

On Sept. 7, the former 9th planet was assigned the asteroid number 134340 by the Minor Planet Center (MPC), the official organization responsible for collecting data about asteroids and comets in our solar system.

The move reinforces the International Astronomical Union's (IAU) recent decision to strip Pluto of its planethood and places it in the same category as other small solar-system bodies with accurately known orbits.

Pluto's companion satellites, Charon, Nix and Hydra are considered part of the same system and will not be assigned separate asteroid numbers, said MPC director emeritus Brian Marsden. Instead, they will be called 134340 I, II and III, respectively.

Other notable objects to receive asteroid numbers included 2003 UB313, also known as "Xena," and the recently discovered Kuiper Belt objects 2003 EL61 and 2005 FY9. Their asteroid numbers are 136199, 136108 and 136472, respectively.

The MPC also issued a separate announcement stating that the assignment of permanent asteroid numbers to Pluto and other large objects located beyond the orbit of Neptune "does not preclude their having dual designations in possible separate catalogues of such bodies."

Marsden explained that the cryptic wording refers to the future possibility of creating a separate astronomical catalogue specific to dwarf planets. There might even be more than one catalogue created, he said.

The recent IAU decision implies "that there would be two catalogues of dwarf planets-one for just the trans-Neptunian Pluto type and the other for objects like Ceres, which has also been deemed a dwarf planet," Marsden told SPACE.com. "That's why that statement was put there, to reassure people who think there would be other catalogues that this numbering of Pluto doesn't preclude that."

The planet Lorien is the homeworld of the Loric people. It is one of eighteen known planets capable of sustaining life, alongside Earth and Mogadore. The planet itself possesses a form of sentience - being both the source of the Garde's Legacies and the intelligence of the Cêpan.

Around this time, referred to as the Dark Ages, the planet was at a crossroads between the desire for rapid development and a need to protect that which was natural and life sustaining. This was a time of needless war with many casualties though not a lot is actually known about this period, it is even a mystery to Lorien's greatest historians. One known conflict, known as the Secret Wars between Lorien and Mogadore, was covered up to protect the utopian image of modern Lorien.

The Loric, similar to humans now, realized that something had to be done to protect the planet and began to live a harmonious existence with it. At some point after this, the Elders found what is known as the Phoenix Stones and the planet itself gifted some of the population (later to be known as "Garde") with special powers to protect the planet and shapeshifting creatures known as Chimæra began living amongst the Loric. The planet and its inhabitants enjoyed millennia of peace.

However, ten years ago, the savage Mogadorians attacked the planet, intending to use the rich resources of the planet to help fix their crumbling planet, Mogadore. After the battle, only a handful of Loric were still alive waiting in orbit. They saw that Lorien was no longer capable of sustaining life, so they set a course to Earth. To this day Lorien is in ruins but waits, dormant, for the Garde's return to revive it.

In the beginning they were a group of nine. Nine aliens who left their home planet of Lorien when it fell under attack by the evil Mogadorians. Nine aliens who scattered on Earth. Nine aliens who look like ordinary teenagers living ordinary lives, but who have extraordinary, paranormal skills. Nine aliens who might be sitting next to you now.

During the invasion of Lorien, the nine Loric children that would become the elders were herded onto a ship with their Cêpans and their inheritances locked in chests so that when the time was right, they would return and restore Lorien and re-populate the planet.

Customs:For Cêpans, they studied at the Loric Academy to learn how to be guardians for the Garde or at the Loric Defense Academy that would defend the planet in case of an attack. There probably other customs for Cêpan that we, as readers are unaware of at the moment.

As you know when you join a lake/river you see who is fishing and what they catch and you also see their player level number next to a star 56. some people have an extra icon and number, for example....dave219 56 12..... (icon not exact, its just an example) Can someone please tell me what this extra icon and number is for and how you get it, thanks.

The second number is your "rank" level. Once you reach max level, the xp you earn is accredited to your rank level. In dave219"s case he was at max level at one point and essentially "leveled up" 12 times since then. The max level keeps increasing with each new waterway release so you'll see a lot of players they may not be level 70 (max as of today), but have a rank number because they were max level at one point between new waterway additions.

So, like, I need an idea of how what is the average number of planets that are expected around a G class star, how many are expected to be Gas giants or terrestrial and what is the likelihood of them being in the habitable zone and containing life.

If I base it on Sol I would suspect about 10 planets, 50% terrestrial and 50% gas giants, with 1 to 3 in the habitable zone and a 30% chance of life developing. I'm looking for something similar to this type of information.

So I guess I'm looking for estimated planetary statistics based on spectral type? I don't want a list of exoplanet and stars that I have to look through and then make a bad guess at, but a good estimation of these numbers based on known facts.

Or, if you want to base it off nonsense, but sound impressive, you could use the Titius-Bode law. But I think that's a bad idea, unless large gas giant planetary migration is kept to a minimum, because a migrating Jupiter would make mincemeat of that "law".

With those limitations to your view, given that large planets are easier to see, it's hard to say how many smaller ones are out there or how many distant planets from their star. There's basically zero information to build on regarding those 2 points.

Rocky planets like the 4 inner planets in our solar system form inside the the Frost Line. These planets are very low water by percentage. Now, you could look at the Earth and say "there's tons of water on Earth", but there's really not, at least, not in terms of water to silicate ratio. Much of Earth's water is on the surface, so we see lots of water, but Earth is basically Iron, Nickle and Silicates with less than 1/3 of 1% of water by volume (even less by mass). By volume, (using the 860 mile diameter sphere pictured below and from this article). Earth is about 1 part in 800 water by volume.
