Dear Friends,
The Falmouth Town Council election is June 10. This contested election will be very important to the future of our town.
Four candidates are running for two seats, with Council Chair
Teresa Pierce leaving the Council due to term limits. The candidates are
Charlie McBrady, Caleb Hemphill, Erin Mancini and Chris Orestis
(running for re-election). All have been out campaigning and have made
their case for election.
You get to vote for up to two
candidates. I regret to have to say that incumbent Chris Orestis has demonstrated a lack of serious commitment to the job, being late or absent for many meetings and avoiding many key votes. He is also the only Council member who does not provide easy contact information for citizens to reach him. His public demeanor has often been disrespectful and, though he describes himself as business friendly, he has done much to discredit our town in that regard. On a personal level, he has twice contacted my law firm behind my back to attack me personally due to my engaging in the local political process in ways he does not like. To me this type of behavior disqualifies him from the town council or any public office.
Turning to the positive, I want to single out Charlie McBrady as my recommended top
choice for a seat on the Council. Charlie is a lifelong resident of Falmouth and will bring to the
Council a respectful approach to all citizens and a balanced, thoughtful, and non-ideological approach to all
issues. Charlie is motivated by a desire to keep Falmouth moving forward
in a manner that is affordable. He will be open to appropriate
spending while being a cautious steward of taxpayer dollars.
The Council lately has been spending our fund balances quite freely, while keeping the amounts below the $200,000 threshold above which toe voters could override the Council's actions. This masks the true costs of our local government. Key
issues facing the Town Council in the coming year include how to be good stewards of what is left of the town’s Unassigned Fund balance, the degree to which
the Town should support a proposed library renovation, and critically
important land use issues that could conceivably alter in a dramatic way
how land is, or is not, allowed to be developed. Charlie’s voice on the
Council will help ensure that these issues are addressed in a sound and
balanced manner.
I will also be voting for Erin Mancini. She is part of a family that is a long time Falmouth fixzture and she is very involved in the community through her children and the schools. She is also a person of good will and serious character when considering all sides of the issues, and I believe her presence on the Council would be another voice for prudence coming from a hitherto underrepresented slice of our community.
Please make a point to vote on Tuesday June 10, and join me in supporting Charlie McBrady for Town Council. Feel free to forward this e-mail to others in town as you wish.
