Side Note - I started adding these extra games about 18 years ago when some teams from Canada came to Phoenix and asked me to put together teams to play them. I sent out an email asking who would be available. Over the years, what I've found is there are different types of people out there when it comes to playing baseball and it directly relates to your college experience and how successful that is. Believe me, this is over years of experience in this.
Type of player in high school ----- what happens to them in college
1. Just want to play and get better - don't care where, when just love it. ---- these guys have a great college experience because they only care about what really matters
2. Like to play baseball but only when it's on their terms ---- baseball just doesn't work like that, these guys get frustrated and things always seem to be someone else's fault.
3. Like to play baseball but need to see "who else is playing" and "who you are playing" ---- these guys really struggle in college because you can't control your opponent and you certainly can't control who your teammates are when you go to college. - Baseball is about showing up everyday and being able to compete regardless of who is in the other dugout and who is playing next to you ... Figure it out!
4. Just can't get there because of of distance, it's not convenient, Surprise is too far, whatever! ----- Not sure if you even know where these towns are or these players but they found a way ...Doug Mathis (Show Low/Texas Rangers), Brian McFall (Flagstaff/Kansas City Royals), Donnie Veal (Sierra Vista/Chicago Cubs). These guys and so many others (who all played professionally) never used their distance as a problem. yeah, it probably wasn't great to get up at 3am to make it to an 8am workout or leave school immediately to get to a 7pm workout that night ... but they just wanted to play that badly. My point is, if you want to play, you'll find a way. Do you REALLY want to play that bad? I have some people who tell me that its too far from Peoria to Surprise or Scottsdale to Chandler? ------- This is much too long as to why this is not a good thing - so I'll probably just write an entirely different post on this alone.
5. Playing another sport and just can't make it - Completely understandable .. these usually guys do just fine
In our fast paced world, it is easy to look at others around us and wish we had their talent, their skill, their bat, their glove and maybe their future. We are bombarded with messages that tell us to look elsewhere for our success.
Far too many of us are on a wild goose chase in search of some holy grail that will suddenly help us find the right college, a scholarship that will lead to our happiness and being successful. With all of this searching, more and more of us are getting depressed and discouraged and feel as though we just don’t have what it takes. We need to stop looking outside ourselves and start looking inside, beneath our own skin to find what success is really all about.
Today, with faster communications and transportation, instant access to information and people, it is easier to look at the fact that the grass may appear greener on the other side. Yet what really counts is what is going on in your own backyard and what is going on in between your ears.
The old saying is true, success is like a butterfly – the more you chase it, the more it eludes you. But if you relax and focus on the task at hand, it will come and softly land on your shoulder. So unpack your bags, bloom where you are planted, and find the success, joy and satisfaction that are waiting for you, right where you are – in your own backyard.
What does this mean for you, the junior in high school? Finding the right college for you is just that, it’s for you! Not anyone else. As you move forward through this process don’t ever lose sight of that fact. This recruiting process is all about what you want and never get off track by following the path of your friends or someone other than you! Stay focused on YOU getting better, get locked in on YOU doing something to get better every single day and not what everyone else is doing.

Quick thought about college showcases, camps and recruiting clinics
It’s sad to say but most players waste a lot of time and
money on showcases that will do nothing for them. Are they all bad...NO! But you have to find the good ones. Here's what one player had to say about our advice:
-------------------------------------
“Coach Fallon really helped me to understand the recruiting process during high
school when I knew nothing about it. He helped me pick the right showcases to
play in to increase my exposure to good colleges and steered me away from ones
that were less prestigious or good for me.
Later he went on to help put me in contact with coaches from the
university I was interested in attending. Coach Fallon has a great feel for the
college coaching scene and has many connections in it that help him to place
players in the programs that are best fits for them.”
