(c) unaffected expression
(d) regional dialect
(e) impolite speech

Review:
The student’s wording of the question makes the question unclear, and
therefore the answers are also unclear. The interpretation of the text
is uncertain and the answer choices need to follow the text more
closely.

Rewrite:
In the text, “the bird flies away,” refers to
a. Micaela leaving the soldiers
b. the people passing by the soldiers
c. the descending guard leaving
d. the soldier leaving the quarters
e. none of the above

#4 Original:

is the effect of the repetition?
a. it allows the dialogue to flow smoothly
b. it creates connections between the lines
c. a and b
d. it stimulates the movement of the people in the square
e. none of the above

compared to:
Which of the following best describes the rhetorical function of the
second
sentence in the passage?
(a) It makes an appeal to authority.
(b) It restates the thesis of the passage.
(c) It expresses the causal relationship between morality and writing
style.
(d) It provides a specific example for the preceding generalization.
(e) It presents a misconception that the author will correct.

Review:
The answer choices are too simple and easy. It would be best to get
rid of answer choice c and create one answer choice that embodies
everything the student is trying to explicate.

Rewrite:

the sentence, “One the square everyone passes. Everyone comes,
everyone goes.”?
a. It parallels everyone’s movements in the square.
b. It provides a specific example of symbolism.

#6 Original:
What does the smoke symbolize in this quote “their gushings and their

III. “associations’’ (line 46)
(a) I only
(b) II only
(c) I and III only
(d) II and III only
(e) I, II, and III

Review:
The sentence and its meaning is too ambiguous and broad to narrow down
to this student’s interpretations. The question should be rephrased
and the answers rewritten to create a more concrete answer from the
text.

Rewrite:
In the text, “the smoke” refers to which of the following?
I. “soul of holiday”
II. “sweet talk”
III. “vows”
a. I only
b. III only

(c) To put aside as if by throwing
(d) To utter glibly and insincerely

Review:
The student’s question is satisfactory, but the answer choices are not
challenging enough. In the text, this line is followed by the lines
“answer us” and “tell us.” After reading the text, the answer is too
easily distinguishable.

Revision:
In context, the expression “at your feet we are pressing” is best
interpreted as having which of the following meanings?
a. We are continuing forward.
b. We are supporting you.
c. We are pushing you around.

(c) “stage-declamation’’ (line 21)
(d) “liberty’’ (line 22)
(e) “venture’’ (line 22)

Review:
This is the incorrect use of antonomasia. It would be more effective
if the question explored the text for similar phrases that refer to
Micaela.

Rewrite:
